Per Gabe DeArmond referencing coming to Missouri:

quote:

"When we got here, people were like, 'Damn, they got a program over there?'"

Thoughts?

If that was an Anderson quote...how dumb of him not to prepare his players. I found it laughable.

The quote was not that off base because he wasn't talking about other teams' fans perception of us, he was talking about our own fans and alumni's apathy toward Mizzou hoops at that time, i.e. 2006. And at that time, he is absolutely right: football was winning and that was the focus, our fanbase's interest in the basketball program had whittled down to its absolute nadir. Not since maybe the late 1960s/very early 70s had there been such lack of interest in Mizzou basketball as their was by time that last year of the Quin Snyder era mercifully limped to an end. You gotta remember what a morgue Mizzou Arena was, you gotta remember the home losses to Sam Houston State and rapings by (then still bad) Baylor and so on, and all the bad feelings about Rickygate and dumping popcorn on Quin's coked out head...we just didn't care. Fans were making comments at the time like "It's like we don't even play the sport of basketball anymore." That's not very far off at all from Andersons "Damn, they got a program over there?" quote about how it was when he got here.

Now, if that quote were about our overall history/tradition or about the national perception of Mizzou, then he could go frick himself. But watching the tape of the postgame, that's not what he meant, the context was discussion of our own fans' passion and whether we gave a shite about the program at the time he got here. At that particular time, we just didn't. Many, many a long time Mizzou season ticketholder had stopped coming altogether.

I am grateful to Anderson for rebuilding our program. He did some good things at Mizzou, but by the time he left his style was wearing thin and the team was fractured.

The only thing I hold against him was the way he left. And I take that cue from the players - Kim English tweeting to "boo that man!" and Bowers declining to comment on him in his post-game interview. The players felt like he didn't handle things well, and that says a lot to me.

Finally - his style of basketball? It can be very effective, and it's a blast to watch. But as other teams figure it out? Then his teams look lost and overwhelmed, like they did last night. His teams at Arkansas will get better - but I don't believe he's the second coming of Nolan Richardson.
