The main competition for Mark Richt was Minnesota Golden Gophers coach Glen Mason. WHEW! Bullet dodged there!

One of the main names being thrown around was Ray Sherman. I was somewhat ok with him because he was an NFL guy (was with the packers at the time) and having a black coach might persuade some guys to come here.

However, in hindsight I am 100% completely and totally happy with who we got. I can't even really remember anyone else we were interested in, but Richt certainly has done well. Whether he should be fired or fired 5 years ago is another discussion all together, but what he did from 01-07 would be hard pressed for any of those other candidates to match, IMO.

Yeah I remember kinda wanting Richt too, just because he was so dominant in his role as an assistant at a national powerhouse, similar to how people have been in love with muschamp, smart, etc. nowadays.

I wanted them to rehire Goff so we could get back to playing some "physical football". Seriously though I was happy with the hire although at the time I believed that he was a superior playcaller who would liven up our offense. He has turned out to be more of a CEO type of coach.

Richt appeared to be a significant upgrade after Goff and Donnan and he was. No NC yet but recruiting improved and the team has been consistently better.

Me too.

But after all the championships at FSU, I wasn't pissed about some young gun offensive genius coming in either.

The fact he hit the ground running and had an SEC championship in 3 years pretty much removed all doubt.

Interesting fun fact: All SEC coaches in modern history to ever win an SEC championship all won the first one within 3 years.

This is Muschamp's 3rd year. Statistics say if he doesn't win it this year, he'll never win it.

I was glad they got CMR as I thought he had coached against that a-hole supplier and at least broke even in games. I thought we would turn the gayturd thing around. Boy was I wrong. I agree the first four years were okay even given the mental lapses like running the ball on the final play of the game so we lose as we run out of time. However, as time went by I became more unhappy with his coaching. Oh well.

It took Tuberville longer than that but other than him I think you're right. That's an interesting stat.

Until this season, and maybe the 2005 team, we really hadn't seen an offense like what he had at Florida State. Part of that was the ACC blowing and they were able to pad stats against bad teams, and the other part is for all the talent we have had at Georgia in Richt's tenure, we haven't had a team that was as loaded on offense as his 1999 FSU team. They had a Heisman winning QB (Weinke), one of the great college WRs of all time (Peter Warrick) and a good running game. The fact that Richt has been able to go from calling plays to this CEO role is a credit to him. He hasn't brought home the ultimate prize yet, but besides 2008-2010, he has really done a great job. Remember, it took Tom Osbourne 22 years to get his first one, but he got 3 in his final 4 seasons.

You are right, it took tuberville 6 years.

Upon further research, it took Fulmer 5 years.

Coaches winning seccg in the first 3 years-

Saban at LSU
Miles at LSU
Saban at Bama
Richt at UGA
Spur at Florida
Urban at Florida
Chiz at Auburn
Stallings at Bama
Dubose at Bama
