Missouri is already in the midwest and Arkansas isn't.

Ok, who is the big-name that wants to go to Missouri?
Remember, they spent weeks chasing after everyone just trying to find an OC before settling and hiring from within
Porker, there is something you're missing here. The guy making the hiring decision, Pinkel, didn't want a change in the first place. It was forced on him, and a lot of people don't believe for a minute that he seriously went after anyone external for the hire. Yes, there was an offer made - and from what I understand, it was a low-ball offer. Pinkel believes strongly in promoting from within - he's done it his entire career. Hiring Josh Henson was a big step for him when he came to Mizzou a few years ago.
Pinkel believes in his staff - almost blindly. He truly felt there was no one out there who was better, for the money, than what he already had on staff. So they let him have his way. I personally believe Alden (our AD) just gave him enough rope to hang himself. If Henson doest a good job as OC, great - I hope he does. If not - it's Pinkel's head on the block.
As far as recruiting goes, it if were me....
1. Lock down Missouri - we got 80%+ of the Missouri kids we offered.
2. Continue to recruit Texas, and look for 3-6 from there every year.
3. Step up efforts in Georgia and Florida, try to build relationships there.
4. Recruit the contiguous states - Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee (Memphis), Kentucky, Illinois (Chicago especially) - for some of these states, we are the gateway to the SEC.

Missouri should have access to KC, STL, Memphis, and Illinois recruits - they should be viable if they get their act together

I wish they'd HIRE someone already with relationships in Georgia and Florida. It was a mistake not doing it even before the announcement of the move was made. We'll never beat UF/UGA/Bama and the like in a head to head recruiting battle, but if they had someone with established ties already, we might be able to pick up 3-5 kids from the area instead of the 1-3 we currently get.

Yes, even offered more $$$ per year.

Token interest. I think the fans wanted it. Pinkel did not is what I've heard. I think what semo was saying is she heard much the same thing and that they made a low ball offer because if they didn't at least make an offer, the fan base would have gone nuts. This way they appease the fan base, Chaney says no, and he can hire his own guy from within.

Mizzou offered more than Arky for Chaney? That's the first I've heard that. Not saying it's wrong, just haven't heard that before.

He was offered more $$$ per year than what he got at Arkansas.

Not much more, but it was more. More job security at Arkansas. Plus he could bring Pittman with him to Arkansas.

Like him or not, Haith gets it to some extent. Pinkel needs to sit down and talk with him. This years class has a kid from Memphis and next years class currently has a commit from an Arkansas kid.

OK so you are telling me it was token interest and Missouri lowballed Chaney. UR tells me he was offered more than we offered Chaney. Not sure what to believe at this point

Memphis has the reputation, deserved or not, of being pretty dirty when it comes to recruiting. I don't think we're very good at that. Yet.

Apparently we've heard different things. But it's a good point that job security might have been an issue for Chaney - that makes sense. Either way, I still believe PInkel got who he wanted. I hope he's right.

Believe UR. He's more knowledgeable than I.

It would make sense to hire a proven recruiter with connections in those places but you have to still figure out where your bread and butter is... there has to be a place where you feel like you're the team that should be favored to get the best talent in that area.
I feel like Missouri and perhaps western Illinois should be that for Missouri. They should look at Memphis, they should still look for the players others miss in Texas and Georgia but their bread and butter has to be more regional IMO.

There is a lot of talent in Illinois. They should recruit there a lot better as they can sell those kids the SEC.
Absolutely.
We are NOT going to be able to pull recruits from Georgia or Florida the way we need to, or the way they want to pretend they can. Missouri doesn't have the prestige of the state colleges to get those kinds of kids away from their home.
What we do have though is being an SEC team in the midwest. That is their main advantage and they absolutely need to play to it.
They also need some success to show though. That will be the problem. Missouri will be curb stomped yet again this year in the SEC.
Think the program has peaked and will be in the bottom echelon of the SEC for years to come.
