the use of the word "coonass" is an ethnic slur that was reclaimed by cajuns in the mid-20th century. prior to the reclaimation, ethnic cajuns were heavily discriminated against in the education system and in workplace environments, which is why many of them did not pass the language down to the next generation (in order to avoid them having to face the same discrimination). some people now use the word, self-referentially, as a point of pride in the effort to dispell its prior negative connotation (see also: the n-word). when nick saban said "coonasses" a year or two ago, a lot of people were unhappy with that because its usage by a non-native is generally associated with being perjorative.
