Thanks man. I appreciate the info. So you don't actually redshirt someone until the season starts. So everyone is free to compete for the starting gig and soon as their on campus. And he could even play a game or two and still be able to redshirt as long as it fell under the percentage to still be "allowed" to redshirt? Am I understanding you correct?

Depends on what your QB depth looks like.

Stephen McGee enrolled for the 2004 Spring Semester, yet still redshirted in the 2004 season while Reggie McNeal had a walkon (Ty Branyon) as his backup.

Jameill Showers and Matt Joeckel both enrolled for the 2010 Spring Semester, yet redshirted for the 2010 season because the QBs were clearly established (Jerrod Johnson, Ryan Tannehill).

Johnny Manziel enrolled for the 2011 Spring Semester, yet redshirted for the 2011 season. Mike Sherman wasn't going to play him that season regardless.

As a rule of thumb, unless the QB is CLEARLY good enough to compete for the starting job, you should redshirt him.

The last A&M quarterback that didn't redshirt was Reggie McNeal...and that was only because R.C. Slocum promised him he'd play as a true freshman.

Typically if you have an established starter you will redshirt freshman quarterbacks. If that starter gets INJURED for the season, however, the redshirt may or may not come off depending on how confident you are in the backup.
