Should recruits be able to sign a LOI @ any time?

All this drama leading up to national signing day is bordering on the ridiculous. I know some recruits are attention whoring and enjoying the spotlight and others truly may be undecided but most of this, including the behavior and comments of some fans, is clownish.
Shouldn't any recruit who decides early where he wants to play be able to sign and be left alone?

I think the kids are at the point of screwing schools more than the other way around. I mean coaches pull scholarships, but these kids are screwing so badly with universities
There should be an early signing period IMO, like Mid-November/December, then teams know where they stand

I don't think it's a great idea.
Players get hurt. Players get in trouble. Grades need to be taken into account.
Say you sign a guy in August and he starts to slack of his senior year academically, you are screwed. Wasted scholarship that could've gone to someone else.
Plus, the hard deadline date lets more schools have fair shots at players. Every school understands the timeline it makes it easier to optimize recruiting time and budgets.

All great points but what about the "we are only giving 1 QB an offer" a 4 star guy accepts, is committed to you til a week before signing day, then poof he's gone, and the school is screwed
I don't think Elliot leaves OSU, but it could happen to OSU this year (although OSU is stacked at the position even without him)

No. The points from the school perspective have already been made, so I won't revisit them.
From the player's perspective, it's ultimately their choice on where they want to go to school. A lot can happen between a summer recruiting trip and February.
Family situation can change, i.e. a parental job transfer.
Could make new friends at an all-star game.
Break-up with a girlfriend.
The Coach who recruited you could either be fired or moved on to another job.
Just a few things I could think of off the top of my head. Point being, it'd be grossly unfair to the student to be locked down at one school as early as July or August of his senior year.

No. think about how many guys will be pressured/ forced into signing LOI on visits. That would be horrible.
And like whats already been said a lot can happen in the course of a season. Would hate for a kid to change his mind and not be happy with his choice.

No, there are some kids who commit to each school they visit
I do think an early signing period like other sports have wouldn't be such a bad idea.

True, but on the flip side, a lower ranked QB gets the spot in his place. Maybe that guy turns out to be a beast. Teams always have backup plans.

Maybe a "letter of intent" could actually be just that: I intend to play there unless...then there can be conditions such as a coach not being at the school, injuries etc.
Could actually be a good business: once these kids are 18 they can legally sign contracts

Yes, Senior year in HS. Would stop alot of the chaos.

If your team doesn't know it's needs, and only recruits 1 QB when that's an area of importance, then they deserve to not get him. If losing 1 recruit hurts your chances of winning next year, then you have more problems than that kid flipping.

I don't think so. Reason being a school could play off of the kids emotion after a visit and talk them into signing off their visit high.

A selling point for a lot of teams is "you'll be the only guy we take at the position this year" so you can get that stud you want. 5* guys don't grow on trees no matter what team you root for, so when you lose one last minute it really can damage a lot

First, they wouldn't be able to do that anymore if their 'committment' entailed actually signing their name to what amounts to a contract. If their answer is 'I can't sign yet' then you KNOW they're not committed.
Secondly, it would end this 'soft verbal' nonsense. By the way, what the hell is a 'soft verbal' and how is it different than a 'hard verbal'? How it's delivered?
Third, it would relieve the kid who knows where he wants to go and his family from being pestered to death by coaches who have no chance to sway them to their school.
Fourth, it would make the whole exercise a little more honest. Kids who knew where they were going could sign say in December and let the ones who truly weren't sure be the ones who were focused on from that point until the final signing day.
