I agree, never understood the obsession with huge enrollments. I want my university to be more selective and not just admit anyone, devalues the degree in my opinion. I wish Arkansas would stop increasing like it has in recent years, the campus is starting to grow on top of itself.

Harvard accepts More applications than Arky each year. But they are more selective. You should think before you post.
More students does not mean lower standards. Especially when you're the boss.

Arkie is in a very different situation from A&M. Texas has grown from under 17 million to over 27 million people since 1990. Texas has a net gain of about 500k people per year currently, it's just crazy. There are 3 Tier 1 Schools in the State and one of them is Rice which is a tiny private school.. Thus the pressure is on A&M and Texas. Texas was 50k in 1990 and is 50k now. A&M has grown from 43k to 51k. Thus both schools have gotten far more selective.
A&M plans to grow to 75k by 2025 or so, though a lot of that will be Grad School and other areas. Still this year is 37k applicants for 8k slots. The issue A&M and Texas has is the "Top 10% rule" that guarantees admission to any grad in the Top 10% to any public University (realistically A&M and Texas). All HS's aren't created equal so it is actually good news for SEC schools. More and more smart Texas kids from top HS's that are outside the Top 10% but are great students are leaving the State because it is such a step down to many of the other Texas publics and not everyone wants to go private (SMU, TCU, or Baylor).

when did I say applications? I specifically referred to enrollments. if you like your school handing out degrees like candy then fine, I'm content with graduating from a school that doesn't. to each his own.

FL is pretty crazy with some of the enrollment numbers.
UCF: 59,767
UF: 49,589
FIU: 47,966
USF: 47,122
FSU: 41,710
And FAU has around 30k.

I'm content with going to the school that's more highly recruited than all but one. See Wall Street Journal.
I'm also content with going to a school who degrees pay more than any other SEC school not named Vandy.
But if you're content with something less, to each his own.

You are wrong. Top 10% is a statewide law. 8% only applies to Texas.

I'm content with how I'm doing in my career and with the education I recieved. that's all that really matters I suppose. just annoyed with the 'big school bravado' that people down in Austin used to and still throw around. this thread just reaks of that.

Actually you are wrong twice. The Top 10% rule applies to all Texas Public Universities but really only A&M and Texas are affected. Texas hit 81% of apps that were Top 10% (A&M is in the 60's) and they got the law modified that only 75% of applicants fall under the rule. Thus the number keeps declining to 8% currently and soon 7% but that only applies to that 75% of applicants. A&M may well hit the same threshold this year with the increase in applications.

Honestly, I'm just proud that my alma mater has risen from just a small cattle college to a world class university that people are beating down the doors to get into, and feel lucky to have been accepted and earned a degree from said institution.
Numbers aside, there is legit cause for pride. Sorry if that rubs you the wrong way.
