The "brilliance" of Les Miles. (And I kind of mean that)

I have to admit, I have a lot more respect for Les Miles at this point than I ever have before. He leaves you befuddled with a lot of his calls as a coach, but he just flat out wins. Year after year, he wins.

Here is where I think Les has a certain degree of "genius" but it is also one of the reasons he always seems to lose 1-2 games every year he has no business losing. At the very least, he "nearly" loses a couple every year that shouldn't even be close: HE RECRUITS/COACHES/LIVES TO BEAT BAMA.

Les got lucky when he showed up at LSU. Saban had awakened the giant and had built a program that could win on talent alone. All Les had to do was keep things rolling. And he did (mostly). And even though he would lose a couple every year to inferior talent, he did well enough to win a BCS championship.

But then 2008 & 2009 showed that he definitely was winning with "Nick's recruits." He got a little lazy perhaps. But then he struck upon his most brilliant idea as a coach: making BAMA the enemy. He started calling BAMA the "m'fing Tide" and referencing them in every LSU gathering he spoke at. LSU people ate it up, and Les became more motivated.

He started recruiting at an elite level again and built teams that can beat BAMA. I give him credit. LSU is clearly one of the top 2 programs in the SEC and he has had them near the top for nearly a decade now.

But therein lies his current weakness as well. He is motivated to beat BAMA. He has built teams to beat BAMA. But he isn't as motivated to beat other teams and doesn't prepare LSU as well against inferior teams. RE: Auburn, Ole Miss, and Arky in 2012.

Anyone agree with this assesment? Anybody else respects him more now than even when he won his BCS?

Our team was Bamasessed this year. The team Bama played on 11/3 was good enough to win the national championship.

They blew their load and sleptwalk throughout the rest of the season after that game. They should have beaten Ole Miss and Arkansas both by 2 touchdowns. The sleptwalking came back and bit them in the arse in the bowl game. People don't want to hear it, but our team was obviously not motivated for the Clemson game. It was a lose-lose situation. You win, congrats for beating the ACC. You lose, you must suffer the embarrassment of losing the ACC. No win situation.

But back to my original point, the team and staff saved everything up for the Bama game and once they fell short, they deflated. The LSU team on 11/3 deserved to play for the national championship. Hell, even the LSU team who played #3 USCe looked like a national championship caliber team. But you can't show up for 2 games and just think you'll just play to not lose the others. Which I wasn't even tripping about going to the Chick Fil A Bowl. They deserved it.

GCTGR:

You nailed it. LSU played lights out against BAMA this year and BAMA was very lucky to come out of that game victorious. LSU would have beaten anybody that day!

But it's like that every year! They play their best game of the year every year against BAMA (regular season...lol).

The Saban vs. Miles rivalry has become the stuff of legends.

Oh yeah. He discovered the perfect schtick at just the right time. LSU fans weren't real happy with what was going on on the field. But they HATED Saban at that time. Les was really smart. He never called out Saban, but started that whole "f'ing BAMA" talk and immediately became as loved by the LSU fan-base as "Mike" himself.

Here's a link to an article where he's asked about saying "f'ing BAMA" :

LINK

"Q. Do you regret saying, F'ing Alabama at that rally? And who wins in a boxing match, you or Nick Saban?

COACH MILES: I can tell you that at the end of a recruiting season where there was a lot of hearsay and innuendo, there was some heated exchanges, I can tell you that I did have emotion, and I certainly regret any choice of words that you described that I made.

No, I am not in any way derogatory towards Alabama. I look forward to competing with them and their coach. "

A better description of the infamous quote:

"There was that f bomb he dropped, in reference to Alabama, at a recruiting gathering for LSU alumni and boosters last February, not long after the Tide had hired former LSU coach Nick Saban. ("We're looking forward to playing Florida. We're looking forward to playing Auburn. But we have a new rival in f------ Alabama," Miles told the crowd, which gave him a standing ovation.)"

Could've put Alabama in their place, but he has squandered the last two opportunities in foolish fashion. Now it's a point of no return with LSU butt hurt ness and Alabama chest thumping.

So your entire post boils down to "Les Miles is good because he thinks about Alabama a lot."

Either a brilliant troll attempt, or one of the dumbest posts I've ever seen.

Actually the Lsu players win, in spite of Miles. It's been this way for his entire tenure in Baton Rouge.

This is really dumb. Off the top of my head, "fricking Alabama" was a soundbyte from late summer 2007, when Saban first showed up, and while Saban's last class was still at LSU. And if he's so motivated solely by beating Bama, what the flying frick happened in the 2012 BCS National Championship?

Sorry but IMO Les is no more brilliant than a soapdish.

LSU wins in spite of him.

You're close, but that is a bit of an exaggration. It was at the recruiting bash in February 2007 that he said:

quote:

Les Miles, head football coach for the Tigers, apologized for comments he made to almost 5,000 fans at the annual Bayou Recruiting Bash on National Signing Day held last week.

A TigerTV reporter filmed the conference at the Baton Rouge River Center. The campus channel aired video clips yesterday.

"So five from Texas," Miles said at the conference in reference to his new recruits. We took four from Florida. We took two from Alabama. You bet your arse ... We're looking forward to playing Florida. We're looking forward to playing Auburn, but we have a new rival in fricking Alabama."

Miles issued a statement yesterday apologizing for his comments.

"I apologize for the inappropriate remark I made at the Bayou Recruiting Bash last Wednesday," Miles said in the statement to The Daily Reveille. "This was a private booster function that was closed to the working media, but that's no excuse for my remarks. That remark was out of character for me. I got caught up in the emotion of the day and the excitement of the moment, but I should have used better judgment."

Being a Michigan man, Miles knows the value of identifying a rival and getting his players up to play them (think Woody/Bo). He also probably believes that if you can prepare your team to beat the best opponent on the schedule, you're chances are good that you can beat every one else.

Now let me clarify the "LSU/Alabama rivalry" thing here. Prior to the 70's, Ole Miss and Tulane were CLEARLY LSU'S rivals. Through the 70s it became clear that hose two programs had fallen a step behind LSU, but Alabama was beating LSU every year. That's when the desire to beat the Tide began in earnest. Throw in a 30 year home losing streak to Bama, and the desidre becomes an obsession. Thorw in the then recent hiring of LSU's ex-coach at Alabama, and you have the origins of the statement andd emotion.

So while Alabama may not see LSU as a main rival (the two teams are technically rivals as they compete against each other for the same prize, the SEC championship) Alabama is clearly, over decades, the best team on LSU's schedule and so the desire to beat them is great among the fans. That is how LSU fans have come to see Alabama as a rival. Miles just uses this as motivation for the team. And I'd say rather effectively.

Or perhaps Les kicked the team's best QB off the team before the season started, and LSU had no one to replace him with. If Perrilloux doesn't get dismissed before the 08, it's very doubtful LSU goes 8-5 and 9-4 in those years.
