How long before a recruit truly develops?

Well recruits like Clowney are ready immediately.

I feel like top OL recruits it generally takes them a bit of time to develop even if they start from day 1. Just the jump in level of going against HS DLs vs SEC DLs I think would take anyone time to adjust to.

Who is the biggest bust? Just look at Texas' roster.

Others develop after a year of redshirting and then dominate - e.g. Michael Brockers who redshirted, moved inside to DE, played two years, then got drafted in the 1st round after his RSSO year.

Still others come on as seniors.

Some guys don't develop enough in HS to be considered D1 prospects and emerge through JUCO or lower division schools.

Some guys were backups in college but blossom in the NFL.

LSU had four 5 stars in the class of 2009: Russell Shepard, Rueben Randle, Chris Davenport, and Craig Loston.

Shepard: I think it is safe to say he's a bust considering his 5 star status. Rivals confuses me sometimes. They give a guy like Shep 5 stars based on athleticism and potential even though he lacks a position, and they give a guy like Morris Claiborne (same class, same team, same athleticism and potential without a position) 3 stars. Which one was drafted in the first round and which one will be an udfa if he is lucky?

Davenport: Bust. From a small school in Louisiana. Was given 5 stars because he was a big fish in a little pond. He lacked the aggressiveness to play DT in the SEC. Was a career backup at OT. Passed up by a freshman this year for the starting job after Faulk got hurt and Hurst left the team. Recently put in a transfer to Tulane. He's gone.

Loston: Hasn't really lived up to his 5 star status, but he played pretty well for us this year. He's a bigger safety, so he shouldn't be asked to cover guys he can't cover. However, he is very good at what he does, which is hit people. Loston is returning for his senior season so he has a chance to refine his game and live up to his potential.

Randle: Did what was expected. He excelled at LSU, was one of the best WRs in the SEC at a time when there were are lot of good WRs, and he did that on a team with two terrible QBs. Drafted early. Started to come on for the Giants late in the year. Time will tell whether Randle can elevate his game and excel in the NFL on a consistent basis.

Here's the thing. They had different competition in HS.

The TRUE comparison is comparing Johnathan Gray to Trey Williams. Both were 5-star backs, both went to Texas 5A high schools. Here are their numbers:

Gray: 149 carries/701 yards, 3TD (4.74 ypc), 11 catches, 151 yards, 1 TD: 852 all purpose yards - 4 TD

Williams: 65 carries/376 yards, 5 TD (5.78 ypc), 12 catches, 171 yards, 25 returns, 557 yards: 1,104 all purpose yards - 5 TD

It was widely known that whichever back went to Texas A&M, the other one would go to Texas. When Trey Williams committed to A&M, it likely forced Gray's hand.
