He played in a very respectable league and was the first player to ever have his number retired there. So yeah.

It looks like we have 8 schools that are fielding legit Top 20 teams, along with Texas A&M which might be a Top 25 caliber team, and Georgia which might be a Top 40 caliber team.

Alabama, Auburn, Missouri, & Tennessee, prepare your anuses.

Here's a breakdown of the 23 preseason All-Americans:

West
AL (0) -- N/A
AR (3) -- Ryne Stanek (RHP), Colby Suggs (Relief P), Dominic Ficociello (2B)
AU (0) -- N/A
LS (5) -- Raph Rhymes (OF), Aaron Nola (RHP), Mason Katz (1B), Ty Ross (C), JaCoby Jones (2B)
OM (1) -- Bobby Wahl (RHP)
MS (3) -- Adam Frazier (SS), Jonathan Holder (Relief P), Hunter Renfroe (OF)
TA (0) -- N/A

East
FL (1) -- Jonathon Crawford (RHP)
GA (0) -- N/A
KY (3) -- Corey Littrell (LHP), Austin Cousino (OF), A.J. Reed (UTIL)
MO (0) -- N/A
SC (4) -- Grayson Greiner (C), Jordan Montgomery (LHP), Colby Holmes (RHP), Tyler Webb (Relief P)
TN (0) -- N/A
VU (3) -- Spencer Navin (C), Conrad Gregor (1B), Tony Kemp (2B)

And by position...

10 pitchers
RHP - Stanek (AR), Wahl (OM), Crawford (FL), Nola (LS), Holmes (SC)
LHP - Littrell (KY), Montgomery (SC)
Relief P - Suggs (AR), Holder (MS), Webb (SC)

13 position players

1B - Gregor (VU), Katz (LS)

You can find last season's SEC-only statistics here: LINK.

It gives individual stats for all the top hitters & pitchers, so you can see what these players are known for doing.

For example...

Hitting
Rhymes, .458, 3 HR
Gregor, .345, 2 HR
Frazier, .319, 0 HR
Cousino, .302, 6 HR
Ficociello, .301, 4 HR
Katz, .299, 5 HR
Reed, .289, 1 HR
Ross, .287, 3 HR
Jones, .282, 3 HR
Navin, .270, 1 HR
Kemp, .267, 0 HR
Greiner, .258, 3 HR
Renfroe, .254, 3 HR

Keep in mind that this is only over 30 games, so Couisno's 6 HR would be equivalent to about 32 for a 162-game MLB schedule.

Pitching
Wahl, 2.30 ERA, 58.7 IP
Crawford, 2.56 ERA, 38.7 IP
Littrell, 2.93 ERA, 61.3 IP
Holmes, 3.89 ERA, 39.3 IP
Stanek, 3.91 ERA, 46.0 IP
Nola, 4.78 ERA, 52.7 IP
Montgomery, 4.89 ERA, 35.0 IP
---------------------------
Holder, 0.00 ERA, 11.7 IP
Suggs, 1.37 ERA, 19.7 IP
Webb, 3.06 ERA, 17.7 IP

I like our USC's chances to get back to Omaha, what's crazy is that we are returning 2/3 of our weekend starters from the 2011 Championship team...

Away Series (MSU, MIZ, ARK, ALA, A&M)

Projected East
1.Vanderbilt
2.Kentucky
3.South Carolina
4.Florida

1.Arkansas
2.LSU

5.Texas A&M
6.Auburn
7.Alabama

Projected Finish for SEC tournament
6. Miss St. vs 11. Georgia

I think LSU hosts another regional and ends up with a probable super host spot depending on the years Vanderbilt and Arkansas have.

Apologies to Georgia, Tennessee, & Vanderbilt, as you are not on LSU's schedule.

I think 9 teams make the NCAAs with 5 teams hosting regionals.

New player to watch for USC: 2B true freshman Max Schrock. Think Justin Smoak (although not as much power, obviously) and Bradley Jr.:

quote:

The starting infield features three veterans and a freshman, with two of the returnees switching positions. Former third baseman LB Dantzler has made a smooth transition to first base, while Chase Vergason has shifted from second to third in order to make room for fantastic freshman Max Schrock.

How impressive has Schrock been since stepping on campus in August? Holbrook plans to hit the Chapel Hill, N.C., native third in the batting order.

"Max has been one of our better players since August, when we started fall practice," Holbrook said. "He's a very gifted second baseman, very gifted hitter and gifted athlete. He knows the game and plays hard. He will be a fun player for our fans to watch and a fun player for me to coach. He's a good player.

"Max is our second baseman going into the season and I expect him to be our second baseman at the end of the season. And he's going to hit right in the middle of our lineup. We're counting on Max to help us win right away."

Senior Dantzler played 3B last season, and was stellar there, but has moved to 1B. Senior Vergason is a more natural 3B, but played 2B last season because his stellar defensive skills were needed on the field, Dantzler was a 3B/1B player, and we already had veteran star Walker manning 1B. So the moves by both players shouldn't be much of a drop-off as they have experience at both...

but the primary reason why both were moved was to make way for true freshman Schrock. He's good enough to warrant it...
