The Running Back Problem(long)

I might get crucified for this topic, but I don't think Jeff Scott should start anymore. I rewatched our game on ESPN yesterday and it seemed he tried to bounce everything outside instead of running upfield. Our OLine was creating seams for Jeff to run through, he just didn't get to them. I believe that with Dodson, Barber, Moore, and Brazley committed, and Walton and Mathers returning, he might not see the field.
Speaking of Walton and Mathers why they didn't get more touches throughout the year is mind blowing. These two guys are home run hitters. Mathers run he got hit, shrugged it off and then still had the speed to out run everyone on that TD. Walton wasn't as flashy outside of his kickoff return but still toted the rock 10 times for 56 yards. That's 5.6 a carry. Mathers even if you take away his 62 yard carry, was averaging 6.8 a carry.
Look I know Jeff has been a great Rebel and I wish him well. Having said that we have more talented and faster backs that are going to need touches and I'm afraid he's going to get left in the shuffle.
Feel free to agree or disagree accordingly. We've got a while until NSD.

I completely agree. It seemed like our running game really picked up when he left the game.
In other news, he gets injured on every other play on my PS3. Quite annoying.

Yeah, but a lot of that was when the Pitt D was gassed which made the frosh look even better than they were. Which was damn good.

I agree but Freeze has said he like JS getting touches because he can take it to the house at any point. I think we will see a good bit if Walton, Mathers and Dodson next year just because they will get a lot of reps in the spring.

Not really Walton got a lot of his carries early in the second half. Averaging over five yards a carry is impressive by any measure.

Completely agree.
Also, I can't wait for Neat to disappear in the depth chart. frick that guy.

I also think there is a good chance Brunetti moves to slot and gets some carries in the backfield.

He's already being moved to that utility position. He's too talented to not get touches.

K Moore is another option at slot. His straight line speed will have to be respected and that puts DM and LT in positions to get more targets too.
Add Vince to that latter part too

Freeze wants 2 groups of 3 WR just because of the speed he wants to play at.
I would think the groups would looks something like this
Group 1
SE - DM
FL - VS
Slot - CM
Group 2
SE - LT
FL - JL
Slot - QM, KM, or BB

10/10 Agree. %100. Mathers and Walton looked great. Walton hit the hole very quick, where Jeff would try to bounce outside and lose yards.

Neat to disappear
Who?
See how easy that is?

The image of him at LSU is burned into my brain for eternity.

Yeah, I was thinking mainly about that big run by Mathers in the 4th.
Both of the kids looked really good. Could Walton not have returned punts for us? He killed on that KO return.

I think the real problem next year will be keeping everybody happy regarding playing time.

In a perfect world, Scott would get 5 snaps and be happy with it. I agree that Scott is clearly overrated and that Mathers and Walton should be playing a lot more snaps come next year. But would Freeze really do that to a senior? I would hope that he would, but who knows. You don't want Scott to turn into a cancer. You can clearly see though that he does possess the same vision as the other two and he may also not be as fast or quick. I'm good with no Scott or Neat next year. Will that happen though, who knows.

I dont agree.
We dont know how reliable these guys are. I'm sure the coaches do. They watch practice and no the tendencies of these guys. Nearly 6 yards a carry is great, but if a guy fumbles in practice alot then is it worth the risk?
Scott pisses me off with the way he ALWAYS wants to run outside. He doesnt fumble the ball though. I think he will see the writing on the wall next year and realize some of these guys are coming.

I couldnt agree more with this. I hate when Neat is on the field anytime. He's dropped passes at important times and sucks at catching punts. Never takes them to the house. His spot is as good as gone for PR next year.
