Sugar Bowl announced crowd of 54,178 is the game's worst since 1939 and smallest ever for a BCS bowl.

January 2 and on a Wednesday does not help either.

the Alabama-Utah game had plenty of seats empty in the upper deck too. It was the least attended Sugar Bowl I had ever been to.

People don't travel to bowl games anymore. The BCS games get the worst of it because of the high face value of the tickets. I would imagine one of the larger attended bowls will have been the NO Bowl with ULL coming in from 2 hours away (along with any of the teams playing in their home cities).

That Cotton Bowl will have the best crowd, right behind the National Championship.

That and the mismatch created by the BCS system of only 2 teams max per conference. There are 5 BCS games which means 10 teams. The SEC had 6 top 10 teams so WTF? We need to fix this. The players can't get excited and the fans don't even show up. You either beat the shite out of them like Florida did in 09' or you get beat bad like Florida did tonight (and Bama in 08').

ULL had 48K plus for their game versus ECarolina just 10 days ago!

total BS excuse.
If you want to talk about how scheduling a game on a Wednesday for TV is bad for attendance have at it.
But if you think playing a team ranked in the top 25 is so beneath you that your team and fans cant get into it?
Sorry but you, your fans, and players are spoiled self entitled brats.

this is the main issue, moving these BCS games to one night each is a shite show.
Move them to the weekend. This wasn't a problem when the Fiesta, Rose and Sugar where all on new years day.

just like last year, playing on a friday and now with two schools right near dallas is perfect, but last year K-State sold their allotment for the cotton bowl in like an hour.

Cotton will actually have a higher attendance # than the Orange Bowl BCS Natty game simply because of capacity of the two stadiums.

Damn, that is pitiful.
ETA: Also, UF has only been to 1 Sugar Bowl in the past 10 years which makes it worse IMO.

I was at the 1996 Sugar Bowl when Florida and FSU were playing for the national championship. A few hours before game time, I was given a handful of tickets and told to take what I could get on the street. I couldn't give them away. Maybe people in Florida don't like leaving the state in the winter.

This was the third time in the past four years the Sugar Bowl crowd was below 70,000. That happened only twice from 1975 to 2009. Florida has now played in five of the past seven Sugar Bowls with crowds under 70,000.
