If you give your loyalty to a team, sit through the highs and lows, the taunting from other teams, spend money on merchandise, go to games, watch games on tv, and pump money directly or indirectly to the program, there's no reason they can't say "we" or "us". If you think that someone had to go to the university to have a stake in the football team, that's rather snobby (not like that's unheard of on this site...how many conversations break out about the type of shorts people wear or how 8s and 9s magically become 5s and 4s that people that spend 50 hours a week on here wouldn't touch}?
One other thing...just because someone went to the university doesn't mean they are a good representative of your university. Having a college degree doesn't negate trashiness or idiocy.
If you read my previous post, you'll see that I don't think you have to have any tie to a particular university to be a fan. That includes speaking about the team possessively.

furthermore, i personally have no problem with sidewalk/tshirt fans who say "we". they put money in the school, watch the games, buy merchandise, etc.
my only problem with them is when some tshirt sip who goes to UTSA tries to talk down to A&M's education, facilities, etc just because tu has won some football games

If you attended the university in question during the years of praise then it is acceptable. If you never went to the school it is never acceptable and rather stupid to try and be apart of something you had absolutely no stake in.
So even if you've donated countless dollars to their program you don't have a "stake" in it? Or attended multiple games, functions, etc? I know people who didn't attend Kentucky because their field didn't require a degree but are boosters who I think have earned the right to say "we".
Kind of silly logic of you think about it.

Nothing says "we suck" like that comment. You mistook the look there pal.

Oh believe me i know. I grew up 20 mins from the campus. I've been deployed three times and when I get home and get to go to a game, the feeling of sitting in Tiger Stadium on a Saturday night damn near brings me to tears. I have as much pride as anyone.

Then it is YOUR team and in spirit you are fighting right along side them on the field just like they are with you when you're out in the field, as you are now. Be safe, my friend. You are a Tiger!!

Possibly the most uninformed post in this thread. 'No stake in'? Really? Tell that to Mom and Dad working at the store, warehouse, office, wherever and get a check stub with a chunk taken out to fund public services...such as the State schools.

I love going to games and seeing the community come together. I love sitting in front of teachers who taught current players in grammar school, and I love hearing people talk about people they played with in high school who are now on the teams.... regardless of where they went to college or if they went. I love that people from all parts of the state come together for 4 hours in joined sentiment, and that there is a pride that people feel for their state that is manifested in the State's university.
This happens regardless of the team you root for, it transcends winning and losing, and it brings people together. I think that people who try to limit the "we" to having attended the school are entitled and idiotic. So in that regard, I think they represent the school as poorly as the people who forget that the football team is actually associated with a school.

It would be awesome if you got Lou Gehrig's disease

Santy Claus was VERY sweet; however, I've been plagued by a nasty Christmas case of bronchitis. I've marooned myself at my parents' and my mom is taking care of me, which is an absolute treat since I live out of town. She just brought me a cherry popsicle.
Did you have a merry Christmas??

Oh yeah. Saw my brothers and sister, their families and parents. Everyone in good health and doing well. My nephew passed away though. But he was in a severe car accident 3 years ago, bed ridden and nearly comatose, of late in constant pain. It was tough but he's in a better place now.
Something about a lady and a cherry popsicle...

I have 2 degrees from Bama and my father was part of the football staff for 27 years there. I say "we" but I also think its fine for anyone to say "we" even if they have no ties. As long as you stay with that team long term (long term should be close to permanent.) Its kind of cheesy to switch teams and still say "we". But only cheesy to that person. I want as many fans as possible to side with me and don't care how long you've been a fan.

Same here. I've only been an LSU fan, when the club did well enough but Chollie Mac couldn't beat Bear, Spurrier beatdowns in 90's, through now of course. Knew a guy in military back in early 80's. He was a Husker/Steeler/Lakers fan. Never said anything, we got along, but I was thinking "Seriously?".

I am so so sorry about your nephew. I've had a family member survive a wreck like that. He's still alive, but he's not even a shadow of who he was. You never want to think someone would be better off had they not survived, but sometimes, it's the reality. I'm glad he's found peace, and I'm glad the rest of your family is well.
Can't beat a cherry popsicle when you have a sore throat.

Thank you.
Warm tea, honey and lemon juice helps too. I bet Mom can fix you up.

I use "we" and "us" when referring to LSU and I'm about to enter my 6th semester at LSU. I tend to think it's okay as long as you have some sort of connection to the school (living in LA, close family alumni, etc.). It sometimes rustles my jimmies too when complete sidewalk fans do this. I've got a buddy who lives in NE Arkansas who loves the Lakers and the Yankees, and that irks me at times

I have a friend who is trying to get season tickets at LSU after living out of Louisiana for a while. She went during one of the REALLY bad times, and she told the TAF guy she should automatically get more points because she went to all of the games during the shitty years. I absolutely agree.
