Who?

Gary Brashears. Transferred to Tulsa after he got in to a lot of trouble his freshman year.

At Arkansas, Brashears saw playing time in just two games during his freshman season in 1999, and completed two passes for 16 yards.

The 6-5, 225-pound quarterback earned numerous All-America honors as a prep senior at Clarksville (Ark.) High School. The Sporting News ranked him the second best quarterback prospect in the country. He made the PrepStar Dream Team and was their fourth top quarterback in the country. ESPN named him the number five quarterback and 64th best player in the nation. Brashears was on the CNN/Sports Illustrated Dream Team, and was a Parade Magazine All-America selection. The National Recruiting Advisor picked him as the nation's second best passing quarterback, while SuperPrep rated him as the fifth best quarterback in the country.

Gary Brashears Jr. QB from Clarksville AR. Signed in 98 was one of the top 5 QBs in the country, had over 31 scholarship offers.

LINK

He was probably the first "elite" QB out of H.S. to sign with Arkansas since Houston Nutt himself back in 76.

Then yes.

Rafe will be Top 75 and a Top 5 QB, probably higher into the Top 2-3 range there with Cumstain.

So what happened with Brashears? This is something that I see referred to but never explained beyond "he was a bust and that was it."

Also, that USA Today link is interesting. I think Carson Palmer was in that '99 class, but I can't think of any other QBs.

A case of a kid cracking under pressure, not from the pressure of being a QB at a D1 school, but a lifetime of trying to live up to high, high expectations...

During his freshmen year, when he finally "got away" he went "wild" parties, alcohol, drugs, etc. He wanted to transfer at semester after his first semester like Mustain and like Mustain, Nutt talked him into staying through spring.

He ended up skipping out on all the summer drills and failing a conditioning exam after summer and walked out/quit the team, didn't tell Nutt just left the program. He eventually decided to transfer to Tulsa.

It wasn't so much that he was a bust as he was talented and could have played, he just didn't want to fricking do it any more after being pushed all his life. It may have been best for him if he went to Florida State or somewhere far away from here, things may have turned out different for him or they could have turned out the same or worse.

LOL this dude pledged with me in 99. He was a complete tool, would've never been able to lead a team. I just remember him being a mega douche bag and we black balled him mid way through the semester. Usually you just let the football players slide by but everyone in my pledge class was like frick him

Sorry if you lurk or post here Gary

3-star DB Kevin Shorter named Arkansas in his top 3 with A&M and Oklahoma. He is coming to Arkansas' junior day, whenever that is.

He is the teammate of DJ Dean, who will commit this weekend.

It will be extremely embarrassing if this kid doesn't commit.

Remember there is another big lineman prospect in South Arkansas. Parkers Chapel OL/DL Will Jones 6-5 324. Arkansas has some work to do to get in on him but having BB there helps. UA had no chance with him before the hire. Miss State, Vandy, and Tennessee are his top 3 right now.

Thanks for the update. It'll be interesting if we pursue him. I read an article on 247 the other day where he was talking about State being his favorite. Don't ask me why but it also didn't sound like he had ever been to Fayetteville before so hopefully we can change that.

He has been to UA on an unofficial under the JLS clusterfrick.... MSU showed him a lot of early love but the OL coach that was recruiting him is gone now (Auburn I think) so that could change things for him.
I know for him academics are very important and the Ivy league could come into play for him as well. (His teammate Philip Hay is currently committed to Harvard).

If you get a full ride to Harvard, you take it. If you have even a .001% chance at the NFL Harvard won't keep you from making it, but it'll sure help having a degree from there than just about any other school when you don't make it in the NFL.

very good point. That was the logic that Hay used. He liked A-State and La Tech had offered last week. But how do you say no to Harvard? Don't know if they will pursue the Jones kid but it's at least probable. I do know that he wants to play in the SEC though.
