ESPN's Ivan Masiel offered his take on Tennessee's hiring of Butch Jones and what he sees as a big difference between the Vols and the rest of the SEC in terms of having a level playing field.

In his "3-Point-Stance" blog, Maisel said that UT athletic director Dave Hart sees Jones as someone that can help the academic side at Tennessee understand where the athletic side stands in relation to its SEC competition.

"The university administration has used the athletic department as an ATM, saddling it with financial responsibilities that the Vols’ SEC competitors don’t have," wrote Maisel. "Hart wanted his new coach to be able - and willing - to explain how that financial burden translates onto the field. "

Huh?

Did you actually attend UT? If you did, they apparently let people who can't read into school.

He's saying "If you keep using the AD only as a money maker, and refuse to give more of the money back for important hires, coaches like Butch Jones are the best we can do. And you'll see this in the near future, as he has to compete against schools who have put the importance on winning and hiring the best, realizing that making money requires spending money."

Didn't Tenn still have two completely separate Athletic Departments, one for men and one for women, until this year?

They have bleeding money for that reason alone...they had double the staff for everything for no reason. Almost every other school merged in the 70s and 80s

Yeah, the whole thing (Maisel's post, and the story describing it) is incredibly vague and doesn't really explain what is going on.

UT needs to take a few meat-head studs with muscles and coach 'em to be dominant football players. Winning games and competing for titles will heal any financial woes you are having.

The whole thing stems from it being harder to get into Tennessee than it is for other SEC schools, sparing Vandy.

The school gave the AD 18 million for this hire. Jesus Christ.

How difficult it is to get into school has literally nothing to do with the school imposing financial burdens on the athletic department.

I have no idea if this is true or not but I cannot see how this translates into a financial hurdle for the AD. I think you are wrong here.
