It used to be before the game only, and it was "We're gonna beat the hell out of you." At a certain point after big victories, the band began playing it after games also. I remember the first few times saying "We just beat the hell out of you" seemed really weird. Of course I like it now. It eventually became to where we only played it after the game.

At what point did it transition?

I also remember at various points while I was at Alabama, the student government condemning the song, and some other entity (NCAA? SEC?) telling us the band couldn't play it anymore. Bama responded by simply playing it over the loudspeaker.

Also, at one point certain "rules" were created in house - it could only be played for certain games or for certain margins of victories. Of course this also fell by the wayside. Fans just love it too much.

So can anyone clear all this up for me? My memory on it is fuzzy. Can we get a definitive timeline of how it all went down?

I spent my youth heavily intoxicated - my memory is too foggy.

That was too long ago to recall so I can't help.

Wow I wouldn't even think wiki would have all that. I thought we'd need Alahunter.

4 times against Auburn this year

I don't remember it being pregame in the 80's...

then again, I don't remember much of the 80's

The song that we chant it to is

"Rock n Roll Part 2" by Gary Glitter (1972)

I was a student there in the late'60s and don't remember it before the games. I also don't remember Rammer Jammer (or much of anything else) after the games.

That's because the song wasn't even released until 1972.

First time I've heard that.

It's been slightly modified.

Well yeah it's a marching band playing a rock instrumental for fans to chant to.

But it is undeniably this song:

It was pregame in the eighties until about '86. That is when the president disallowed it. I believe his official stance was, didn't like giving other team motivation and that it was in poor taste.

Fans would still do it, but without the band it was never the same.

I remember a couple of basketball games that were very big wins, one of the guys in pep band played the first notes post game..... that's all the fans needed to do the post game chant..

Playing "Basket Case" by Green Day to start the 4th quarter is the most random arse thing ever. They tried to end it last year, and students and even players on the team protested, so they kept it. They've been doing it for over a decade now.

Just random as hell though. I don't really get it.

Mal Moore hates Rammer Jammer. That's why the athletic department put the "rules" in place. If it was up to them it would never be played again.

It is one of the most "fun" songs to play. The MDB loves playing it.

The only songs I care about is the Les Mis big defensive play and Rammer Jammer after big wins. I also like when we play "neck". Everything else....meh.

I will say that whoever we have doing the "R-O-L-L-T-I-D-E" chant needs to be punched in the dick until he can stop saying "WHAT!" after it. It's annoying as shite

ETA: If they barred the band from playing Rammer Jammer now, we wouldn't be able to pull the Gary Glitter trick anymore I don't think. That song has been banned by most sporting institutions because of his child porn issues

Truer words have never been spoken.

Since we are on the subject of songs, does anyone know the final two additions to Dixieland Delight? So far I got:

Spend my dollar (On beer)
parked in a holler 'neath the mountain moonlight (Roll Tide)
Hold her up tight (Against the wall)
Make a little lovin' (All night)
a little turtle dovin' on a Mason Dixon night (frick Auburn)
It's my life (New Addition but I think it is "and LSU")
Oh so Right(New Addition but I think it is "Tennessee too")
My Dixieland Dellight

Also, whoever came up with "Home grown country girl (munch munch munch)" deserves a medal.

Yea. I heard them mostly from the Greek section, but most of the student section knew them.
