Alabama has a clear edge. It ranks No. 15 in scoring offense (38.46 ppg). Notre Dame ranks No. 74 (26.75).
If there is much scoring in this national championship game, perhaps the points will come from kickers.
That's a conclusion one could make from a glance at red-zone statistics.
Alabama's red-zone defense is good, but Notre Dame's is better.
The Crimson Tide has allowed touchdowns at a 52 percent rate when opponents drive inside the 20-yard line (14-27).
The Fighting Irish has allowed touchdowns at a 35 percent rate (8-33). But note that Notre Dame opponents have reached the red zone six more times than Alabama opponents.
Overall, Alabama ranks No. 2 in the nation in red-zone defense (63 percent). That's because it has allowed only three field goals in opponents' opportunities. Foes have come away scoreless 10 times in 27 trips to the red zone.
Notre Dame is tied for No. 3 in the nation in overall red-zone defense. Opponents have kicked 13 field goals after driving inside the Fighting Irish's 20-yard line. Foes have come away scoreless 12 times in 33 trips to the red zone.
Alabama has a decisive edge in red-zone offense. It has one fewer opportunity (57) than Notre Dame (58) but has scored 41 touchdowns (74 percent). The Fighting Irish has scored only 27 touchdowns (47 percent).
Add 19 field goals and Notre Dame ranks No. 75 in red-zone offense overall.
Alabama has 10 red-zone field goals and ranks No. 15 in red-zone offense overall.

You would have only stepped on hunters toes if it was "STATS" or "STUFF" in the title.

Looks like they rank 75th.

The problem with looking at stat ranking as indicator is people tend to look at them from a 2 dimensional aspect. In order to truly appreciate how stats may be used as an indicator for sporting events you need to go much deeper.
You failed to do that here and I don't do it for free.
I'm not saying your wrong I'm just saying your post is like a 5 year coloring a picture and thinking its a Picaso.

Wonder what vandy record would be if they played ND sch.?

Not a stat but... my quick comparison:
Notre Dame - Many close calls against teams not that great. A controversial no TD call against Stanford kept them udefeated and also Pitt shite the bed at ND in OT. Could have easily had at least 2 losses.
Bama - A hot A&M team catches Bama after an emotional high coming off big win vs LSU. Bama beats a good LSU team and good UGA team + deals with rest of SEC.
ND has seen no offensive line or running game like Bama. Nothing even close.
HUGE "IF" - IF Saban and staff don't outcoach themselves and try to force the pass uneccesarily, Bama wins the game going away. IF you guys throw like you did against A&M in first half or against UGA in first half, ND hangs in there and anything can happen. Why the hell do your coaches ever throw 2 out of 3 downs???
Quit trying to be so balanced and run the damn ball. Do that and Notre Dame defense wears completely down and they get rolled by 20 pts.

Stats mean nothing when neither team has played each other.
It is easy to compare LSU and Bama based on stats, because they play the same teams and have a very similar style of play.
So not only can you measure stats, but you can gauge how the style of play matches up with particular teams.
But to use stats to compare Notre Dame and Alabama makes no sense.
So it is true that stats don't lie... but the people who fail to correctly interpret the stats do.

Good question.
It has been that way this season & the only thing that comes to mind is having a new OC.
I think the offense would be more run oriented if McElwain were still here calling the plays.
