I have much respect for you and enjoy your posts. However, do not let what Johnny did this year conjure up dozens of JFF all over the landscape.

This wasn't so much about A&M or Johnny and I've thought this for a few years. a&M has the talent on offense to run any style and they'd probably be very good in all of them.

This has more to do with seeing what Art Bryles is doing, OK State won the Big 12 last year, old Miss is much better, Houston, TTech under Leach, OU in the early Stoops spread years, Oregon, Clemson, West Virginia.

Sumlin is the first to run this offense at place that can consistently pull in top 10 recruiting classes. This experiment will be watched closely by athletic directors around the country.

Ever heard of this school called Florida? I think what Urban showed at Florida is that this system can work against real defenses if you have the right players. And when I say the right players, I mean on the offensive line.

Because if Oregon has taught us anything, it is that penetration on the defensive line is kryptonite to the spread.

Did you not watch Oregon-Auburn or Oregon-LSU? Did you not see Florida's near collapse after Tebow graduated?

Have you seen what has happened to Texas in the post-VY/Colt era?

Finesse spreads get blown up against real defenses. Penetration disrupts the timing and rhythm of the whole song and dance. Power spreads can work if you have a BIG oline (see Florida, Auburn 2010, A&M this year) and an elite running QB (see those same teams).

If you don't have those things, your spread team is fricked.

In regard to the comments about the spread working in the NFL: the NFL is two or three rule changes away from becoming straight-up flag football, and last time I checked, you can't play flag football with a pro-style/running attack. It's spread or nothing. Not saying it's right or wrong (NFL), but it just is. College may not be there for a while since college players "usually" are better disciplined and don't hit as hard, so the concussion fears are not nearly as big a deal (yet). With all that going for it, the spread has no inherent advantage over pro-style, so don't look for one to take over anytime soon.

LSU crushes spread offenses on a regular basis.

So lets see the two teams who played in the national championship ran pro-style offenses with great defenses. This year ND runs a little bit of a mix between the spread and a pro style, but have a great defense. They will be playing either UGA or Bama who both run a pro style offense and have great defenses. Stanford just won the Pac-12 with a pro-style offense and a great defense. You see a pattern. Defenses recruit and adjust over time. This is what happened to Florida under Meyer. He had one of the greatest college QB's in college football history and was successful. A&M has two first round draft picks on the O-line and has johnny f'ing football. They picked on a Bama team that this year lacks the speed at LB and DB to cover a spread, but struggled against Florida and LSU who have the speed to defend it.

I did forget about Florida, though it was more of a spread and run. But hey, it worked there.

everybody runs it now dude. and y'all don't run the spread the whole game either; at least not after you lost to florida. i give sumlin credit for using his massive ol quite often in games after that.

Just like the triple option. And the wishbone.

And every other offensive scheme ever developed.

Pretty much this. If you have the players, any old system will work. Georgia Tech would be unstoppable with Bama's O-line and RB's. A&M is nearly unstoppable (although they have been stopped) with a Heisman QB and an NFL O-line.

It all depends on your philosophy and what you know and what you believe high caliber players would like to play in.

2013 update.

3/4 of new SEC hires running the spread, with Arky bringing in an OC with spread experience.

That makes 7/14 SEC schools running the spread. Nostradamusthorpe will be watching this thread.

Not everyone, but most. Hell, next season seven SEC teams will be running some version of the spread.

in 7 years, the sec defenses will be well adjusted/recruited to the spread and it will be on to the next new thing in offense
