Ellis Johnson Already Fired

Yikes that didn't take long but I'd sit on my arse for what his buyout was.

I get it but I don't. Yeah he went 0-12, but how many times can SMiss pay buyouts? That's gotta be hurting the wallet.

damn, I haven't followed them this season so I had no idea he didn't even win a game.

weren't they like 11-2 last year? LOL

all in all, I'm glad we have Whammy running the show now instead of him. I like our more aggressive play calling instead of EJ being too conservative a lot of the time.

My issue is now he ends up coaching the D for one of our new SECcoaches.

Whammy ran mostly the same system as EJ. We blitzed less than 5 times this whole year.

It sucks for EJ, but that's the risk he took. He'll land on his feet as a DC somewhere, unless he retires. There will be SEVERAL teams interested in him as a DC, I'm sure.

re: Ellis Johnson Already Fired

He'll get a DC job at Arkansas, Tennessee or Auburn, make no mistake about that. Someone will grab-him-up.

But here is the problem I have with EJ.

Remember that interview he did with Teddy Heffner right after the NFL draft? When Heffner said something along the lines of Gamecock fans having their doubts about Gilmore because of a down junior year (and I agree, Heffner is an arse and in no way speaks for Gamecock fans although he likes to think he does) ... then Johnson's response was waaaaay the frick out of line imho.

Johnson said, "Those fans over there don't know what they're talking about. They think, because they've had a little success, that they know about good football players - but they don't. They're just idiots."

Now, admittedly Heffner did bait him but Johnson, sitting there in his new office at So Miss, went overboard with the response although, those that know him seem to think he's always that way. Egocentric and an a-hole.

Now, I ask you this. Ellis Johnson, in his 35 yr coaching career, was at South Carolina for three years - the longest stay at any one place in his entire career. Ask yourselves, why?

I guess he's just motivated to try to keep moving up the ladder. He either did well and moved up, or didn't and moved out (trying to find another place for him to move up.)

re: Ellis Johnson Already Fired

scrooster can you link up audio, video or an article with him saying that? Also are you exagerating or did he really never stay longer than 3 years anywhere. Not calling you a liar so don't take it as that. Would just like to fact check because if so that is crazy. Old Dogs don't typically just wander off like that.

The audio was on Teddy Hefner's website for awhile, but he must have taken it down.

And it's true, he's never stayed at any place longer than three years.

Check it out - he's a journeyman, and that's putting it nicely:

While I'm not surprised that his first/only year wasn't a jaw-dropping success,0-for was a surprise. While he might not have been overrated as a DC, he was no world-beater either.

IMHO Whammy is the better DC. Johnson DCing at Auburn does not concern me in the least. Matter of fact, I honestly believe this is his last hurrah. He caught a break getting the SC job when he did and he bolted at the first opportunity. He's out of credits. I seriously question whether or not he will have any success whatsoever at Auburn.

And rehired a week later at auburn. Anyone could see this coming. Soft or not he is the best guaranteed candidate out there for a new coach.

re: Ellis Johnson Already Fired

Auburn has a NCAA cloud hanging over their heads. It does not appear to have affected them too terribly with regard to their recruiting, so far anyway, but still - it's gonna catch-up to them eventually.

I'm not worried about EJ coming here and stealing recruits. I know a lot of people give him all the credit for signing Clowney, and no doubt he'll go around telling everyone that will listen that Clowney was his prize, but I think it will not matter because any recruit in this state will be looking more at the Gamecocks and Spurrier and Whammy than they will EJ.
