Phil Sims, former NY Giant QB was on Brando today and he said that Alabama lacks the speed to compete with certain teams and that's one reason they lost to A&M. I'm no talent evaluator but I've always though Bama had a lot of speed, maybe not to the level of Oregon but certainly in the upper echelon. Demps and Rainey at Florida were super fast and I doubt they ever rushed for 100 yards collectively against Bama. So was just wondering if anyone here is seeing what Sims is talking about or if he's just talking out of his arse.

That is a fair criticism. We are very speed deficient on defense this season, compared to last year. It was pretty much impossible to get the edge on our defense last year. This year everyone has been able to do it. We really need guys like LC, Eddie Williams, and Devall to step up this offseason and earn playing time.

I cant wait for Ragland, Devall, Ryan Anderson, Landon Collins, Dillon Lee etc to see the field. You will notice a dramatic increase in ball hawk, play maker type talent on the field. Its nearly impossible to lose 7 starters on the defense and not notice a drop off in talent. The LB class we signed last year was simply RIDIC.

Speed is only an issue when you meet a faster team with a decent scheme. The speed they are taking about is to the edge and part of our problem is that with all the substitutions being done I think our guys were getting smoked running on and off the field.

The frick? Hopefully this is an inartful paraphrase and that Sims didn't actually say this. Alabama can compete and beat any team in the country. Obviously, Alabama can be beat, but get out with this Alabama can't compete stuff.

As for the speed, I don't think Alabama necessarily has elite speed across the defense, but I think they are fast enough if they play disciplined to handle any offense about as well as any other defense. Oregon's offense would certainly be a handful as it is for anyone. Alabama's problem last Saturday was more tackling and positioning than speed in my opinion.

I think everyone knew that losing the NFL talent was going to hurt some this year. But besides all of those high draft picks, losing Jerrell Harris was a big loss for the D. He had speed to burn on the outside and was an excellent tackler. But it took him a few years to grow into the system. Upshaw was the same way. It took him a couple of years, too.

The players are there. They just need more time. Oh, and we do need another big body in the middle and a bonafide pass rusher

I agree. We spent so much time trying to change personnel that there would be very little time left to get everybody lined up before they snapped the ball.

Jerrell Harris had great speed, but couldn't tackle. That's why he was on the bench & not a starter( other than the KO team).

Harris eventually wised up and had a solid senior season.

As for the assertion that we lack speed....compared to last year, I would agree. No one could get to the edge on our defense last year while teams like Ole Miss, Texas A&M, LSU, and even Mississippi State have been able to do it this year.

There were warning signs but we refused to see them because we were winning and winning handily. The LSU and A&M games exposed our weaknesses on defense and revealed that we are missing those 3 first round draft picks as well as the other starters we lost who went in later rounds.

Need the top Safeties they've gotten to hurry and pan out, there's no Barron or Johnson threat on the back end. Lester exceeded expectations out of HS, but he's still limited as the lead Safety. A combination of HCD, Collins and Eddie Williams will hopefully take the field next year, although Saban talked up Jarrick Williams as the likely DIME this year before his injury.

Didn't think the small amount of time they received by doing so was worth it. It boiled down to taking the starters out for 2nd and 3rd string players and asking them to beat A&M's 1st teamers. It worked several times, but you are still forcing backups to make those plays because you need a few more seconds. Seems like they would plan for that more productively and not have to resort to doing so in the weeks leading up to it.

Alabama has as much speed as anyone in the country. We just lack an elite pass rusher. I feel now, more than ever, we have to have that against those type of offenses.

And Brando was just showing his blind hatred of Alabama once again.

OUr linebackers are not as fast from side to side as they have been in the past. Teams have been able to get outside on us a little bit this year.

First three possessions was execution. We took the ball first and then laid a big egg.

I disagree, I think that last play was well called but poorly executed.

Agreed. Did he even watch the A&M game? And how does losing by five translate to "not being able to compete"? I hate when people just throw around platitudes like that.

Tim Brando's a smart guy, but a renowned TV broadcaster that systematically goes out of his way to berate a fan base.

Bama just isn't as dominating as '09 and '11. Losing 2 first rounders in the secondary is obvious as of late, and Milliner isn't the lockdown corner I hoped he'd be. Sunseri is pitiful in pass coverage.

I think they will play better against Georgia, but if someone can't become inspired and rush Murray without constantly blitzing, they're going to be in for a long night.
