Phillip Fulmer's last 3 years
2006 Tennessee 9–4 5–3 2nd (East) L Outback 23 25
2007 Tennessee 10–4 6–2 T–1st (East) W Outback 12 12
2008 Tennessee 5–7 3–5 5th (East)
24-15 14-10
Derek Dooley's last 3 years
2010 Tennessee 6–7 3–5 T–3rd (East) L Music City
2011 Tennessee 5–7 1–7 6th (East)
2012 Tennessee 4–6 0–6 (East)
Tennessee: 15–20 4–18
Why did UT hate Fulmer so bad? What caused him to get the AXE when he had just went to Atlanta the year before in 2007?
Look at the coaches you had under Fulmer
Starting lineups and coaches
Head Coach: Phillip Fulmer (16th year)
[edit] Offense
Offensive Coordinator / Quarterbacks / Assistant Head Coach: David Cutcliffe
Offensive Scheme: Multiple (I-Form, Shotgun and Singleback)
Player Development / Wide Receivers / Assistant Head Coach: Trooper Taylor
Offensive Line: Greg Atkins
Running Backs: Kurt Roper
Tight Ends / Off. Line / Dir. Recruiting: Matt Luke
2006 Tennessee 9–4 5–3 2nd (East) L Outback 23 25
2007 Tennessee 10–4 6–2 T–1st (East) W Outback 12 12

It was a time for change and unfortunately that change has turned in to a full scale disaster!

I think Fulmer coached himself out of a job. He finished first in the east 6 times and owned Georgia.

What's your next move then? Do you hire someone that is a seasoned vet or someone that can give you the years you got out of Fulmer?

ZERO SEC titles in 10 years. Fulmer could not do shite offensively without Cutcliffe.
His last few classes were extremely poor as well, despite their rankings on NSD. The 06, 07, and 08 classes were pure shite outside of 3 or 4 players.
The gap was only widening between Fulmer's teams and Florida and Bama. Take a look at the scores his last few years in those games.
It is easy to look back now and say Fulmer may have produced an 8 or 9 win season, but really that isn't anything to celebrate when that's your pinnacle.
His last two seasons without Cutcliffe were both 5 win seasons, that is enough to get you fired, coupled with a 10 year SEC title drought.

lol wut? That class is one of the worst in modern Tennessee history. When 2 undrafted players who were marginal at best SEC players are who you pick to highlight the class, you have a big time problem.

Yep. Eric Berry, Denarius Moore, Gerald Jones and literally nothing else of substance. What a class.

In Fulmer's last 4 years(2005-2008), UT went to 2 bowl games. In the last 4 years, UT has gone through two coaching changes, massive player transfers, and constant position coach turnover but have still managed to go to 2 bowl games (assuming they lose to Vandy this Sat and can't go to a bowl game this year).
In Fulmer's last two years without Cutcliffe, UT went 5-6 and 5-7 with two of the worst offenses Tenn has had in the last 30 years.
Had UT kept Fulmer, Tennessee would be going through 7-5 or 8-4 seasons right now. I doubt Tennessee could compete for the SEC Championship even if Fulmer was still the coach.
Edit: Volfan30 beat me to it

He won 10 games in 2007 and went to the SEC championship. I guess going to Atlanta wasn't good enough?
The guy is only 62. Saban is 61 and I can see Fulmer trying to get back in the SEC.

The funny thing to me is that if Dooley went 7-5 or 8-4 you guys would keep him but if Fulmer did the same you want to fire his arse.

To be fair, if Fulmer did that it would have been with his players and no real coaching turnover. Dooley took over the dregs that Fulmer and Kiffin left and still shite the bed

Dooley hired his own guys and has had 3 years to recruit and get the people in to secure his job. The fact of the matter is that he couldn't even win the Western Athletic Conference never the less the SEC.
He's got good coaching around him and he still cant win.
Jim Chaney
2009–Pres Tennessee (OC)
2006–2008 St. Louis Rams (OL & TE)
1997–2005 Purdue (OC)
1993–1996 Wyoming (OL)
1988–1992 Cal State Fullerton (assistant)
1988 Western Michigan (OL)
1985–1987 Cal State Fullerton (assistant)
While at Purdue, Chaney was known as a spread offense guy. When Urban Meyer took his first coaching job at Bowling Green, he sought advice from several of the best coaches using the spread offense. One of those guys was Jim Chaney.[3] But spending a few years in the NFL Chaney gained a new found appreciation for the pro-style offense.[4] When Chaney came to Tennessee he and Kiffin fielded a very pro-style offense, very similar to what Kiffin used at USC. Tennessee currently runs a modified pro-style attack that still relies heavily on the pass game. While at Purdue, Chaney's offense was one of the most potent in the country.[5] He coached future NFL greats, most notably Drew Brees, who was drafted in the second round of the NFL draft in 2001.
Sal Sunseri
1985–1992Pittsburgh (DL/LB)
1992 Pittsburgh
1993 Iowa Wesleyan (AC)
1994 Illinois State (DC)
1995–1997 Louisville (LB)
1998–1999Alabama A&M (DC/LB)
2000LSU (LB/ST)
2001Michigan State (LB/ST)
2002–2008Carolina Panthers (DL)
2009–2011 Alabama (AHC/LB)
2012–present Tennessee (DC)
Between 1985 and 1992, Sunseri worked as a defensive line and linebacker's coach for his alma mater, the University of Pittsburgh.[3] After Paul Hackett was fired as the team's head coach during Pittsburgh's 1992 season,[4] Sunseri was promoted as an interim head coach for the final game versus Hawai?i[5]—a 36–23 loss for the Panthers.[6]
After having previously worked as the defensive line coach for the NFL's Carolina Panthers for six seasons,[1] Sunseri returned to college football on January 21, 2009, when he was named as the outside linebackers coach for the Alabama Crimson Tide football team. [7][8] In January 2012, days after winning his second national championship with Alabama, Sunseri left to join Derek Dooley's staff at Tennessee as the defensive coordinator.[9]

Hey I'm not arguing with you. Dooley is a complete failure as a coach. All I'm saying is that Fulmer had about 20 years of stability when he started to fade away. Dooley on the other hand, had almost a built in excuse to have a slow rebuilding process when he was hired due to coaching changes and was so bad that he will be fired after only 3 years.
You have to admit, it takes a special kind of awful to have all those built-in excuses for failure and still come up short.

In my opinion I would hire a up and comer who actually has good credentials. Charlie Strong for example is a winner who can recruit with the best of them. He has proven he can win at Louisville, granted it is Louisville and the Big East, but he is a true SEC guy and I think he would provide a much needed spark to the program, the fan base, and the players. Gruden would be a good hire I just don't see him coming to college when it looks like multiple NFL openings will be available.

And I believe Moore only came to Knoxville as a high school teammate and friend of Lennon Creer. He was the secondary recruit in that deal. We won 5 games in 2005, and essentially that put Phil on probation. We won 5 again in 2008, and that was the limit for a fan base used to winning 9, 10, 11 games. These 5 win seasons came along with declining recruiting, his failure to fire ineffective assistants, and his coddling of coaches (friends) who were lazy recruiters to spell the end for Phil.

You forgot the one year Kiffin was there......
In Dooleys defense he did inherit a mess, but he is still a knucklehead....
