Yep. People look at our schedule and get disappointed that we have no big name home games, but these mid major teams will have good RPIs and be at the top of their respective conferences.

Gottfried use to put a bunch of cupcakes on the schedule and never any tough ooc road games, thus why we sucked on the road in conference and kept a low RPI.

Exactly. Playing teams like SDSU, Oakland, Cincy, and VCU is better than playing UNC, Indiana, and a bunch of 200+ RPI teams.

Here's what an Oregon State fan told me about their team:

I think many of us are in wait and see mode for this OSU team this year.

My biggest issue with the Beavers the past couple of seasons is that they are poor defensively, even with great individual athletes. They just don't play good team defense.

Robinson used a trapping 1-3-1 zone when he first came to Corvallis. It caused confusion to teams seeing it for the first couple of times, but teams with good ball handling (or teams that had seen it a few times) were able to break it down and get easy buckets.

When they didn't get easy buckets, they often got easy offensive rebounds and put backs, because the 1-3-1 doesn't leave the team in good rebounding position.

Sure, the Beavers caused a lot of turnovers at times, but it resulted in a very streaky team.

Towards the end of last season, OSU started playing man defense a lot more, and they improved dramatically. Eric Moreland is a plus plus lockdown defender, as was Jared Cunningham (OSU's best player last year, now in the NBA).

Devon Collier, Starks, Challe Barton, Jarmal Reid, and others have the potential to be great lockdown man defenders as well this year. We haven't seen much 1-3-1 this year so far - I hope that continues.

Offensively, the Beavers have been pretty streaky the past couple of seasons. Cunningham was a tremendous athlete and could create shots in the lane and get himself to the FT line, but struggled with his deep shot. Starks was really the only reliable deep threat, with Angus Brandt and Roberto Nelson being effective at times. Teams played a lot of zone defense against the Beavers and OSU struggled to make enough shots to win consistently. Sometimes they'd hit a bunch, and others they'd be brutal from outside.

This year, Starks seems to be more aggressive in getting into the lane, which is fantastic. They need someone to take that role over with Cunningham moving on. It will also open more up for him on the outside as well.

Collier is probably the Beavers best scorer overall, though. He's got some lethal moves in the post. But for some reason, Robinson has decided to bring him off the bench in favor of starting senior Joe Burton. Burton throws up tons of circus shots, and gets some of them to fall, but never looks pretty doing it. Angus Brandt has a decent post game, but excels with his jump shot facing the basket.

It will be interesting to see what the offensive identity becomes. I would like to see more inside/outside stuff with Brandt and Collier on the post and Starks/Nelson on the perimeter.

This is what Cecil posted from Grant's PC today:

***Oregon State is "a veteran team, seven of top eight guys back. Ahmaad Starks had 33 points the other night, very impressive, but they have a lot of weapons."

****Nick Jacobs (ankle) was able to practice Monday and "should be full go" for the Oregon State game

***Assistant coaches have started scouting on Villanova and Purdue, but Grant said his focus is Oregon State.

****Grant said that "there is a lot to like" about the way this Alabama team has respond "in the face of adversity" in the first two games.

****Grant did not indicate any changes ahead in starting lineup so expect Releford to continue to come in off the bench.

Andrew Steele said the veterans who played at Madison Square Garden in the NIT two years ago "have had the experience of being there, so now this is a business trip."

Grant has done nothing but make this team better each year. We may not be final four yet but it sure is fun to watch the games.

I kind of like this lineup strategy. He has always been a bit of a slow starter.

Can't remember where I heard it, but I heard Releford is having academic trouble which is why he is not starting. Anybody know if this is true or not?

BTW watching the UK-Duke game and Willie Cauley just had a beast and-1 post-up move....frick Cal

He would probably be playing 30 minutes a night for us. We had him in the bag too.

Everytime I see him make I play I throw my shoe at the television. I promise I'll get over it, one day.

nevermind saw he fouled out in 11 min. Jesus Christ lol. Looks like our young guys are getting comfortable and realizing that they have to shoot the ball.

I think Grant kind of dropped the ball with this class. Next year could be a big year for us. We really needed a guard and another wing IMO. That would give us a full team for next season and Lacey could go to the two and not have to play the 1. We cant keep going on each year leaving scholarships laying around. I think we need to go and get Mostella. Talent is surely not his problem. The minutes will be there next year for him as well. We need the bodies. Wish we wouldve never been faithful to Sina.

Oh yea I just think Mostella fits us perfectly besides whatever problems he has outside of bball. He is very fast with the ball and his game is to drive the ball. He would be perfect at the point and I know he is a natural 2 guard but so is some of the other guys we were recruiting for the point position.

Does Obama's brother in law still coach Oregon state? I know he did a couple years back.
