Would be only the third running back in the Richt era to accomplish that feat (Musa Smith in '02; Knowshon Moreno in '07 and '08).

Most Yards Rushing by a Freshman
1,616 - Herschel Walker, 1980
1,334 - Knowshon Moreno, 2007
890 - Rodney Hampton, 1987
875 - Thomas Brown, 2004
857 - Todd Gurley, 2012
850 - Isaiah Crowell, 2011
731 - Keith Henderson, 1985

I feel like it needs to be said. Knomo was a rsFr. Where TG is a TRUE freshman. Much more impressive IMO.

Musa Smith in 2002 had 1324 I believe, so this will make him the third.

Edited.

For some reason, I was only thinking of freshman 1,000 yarders.

Hershel started the season as the third string back. Vince called him a stiff running back. He missed a game and a half or a quarter as a result of a sprained ankle. We had no real passing attack in those days. A total of 1300 yards in 11 games. So his achievement is even more amazing.

And Herschel's bowl game yards were not recorded during that time period either, IIRC.

Hope he gets it but he's had a very good first season regardless.

If he keeps this up for 3 years (being realistic) then he will go down as the 2nd best we've bet had and that's a great accomplishment.

Agree. I'm fairly young so I never saw Henderson, Worley, Hampton, Hearst and those guys live. Robert Edwards COULD have been an all timer but spent too much time either on defense, hurt, or fumbling. When Knowshon left I thought he could make a legit case to be the 2nd best we've ever had, but yeah Gurley can absolutely do it.

If you think about it Crowell would be on that list had he not got suspended in one game and hurt in another.

Garrison was the real thing, so was Hampton. They had drive and ability. Henderson and Worley were huge partiers. I know, firsthand. Go back and look at some game film of Hearst. You should be able to find some on you tube. Dude was super shifty. You never got a straight shot on him.

He'll definitely get it. Especially if we get a big lead at half, he'll be running all 3rd qtr.

Yeah, I'd say there's a pretty good chance he gets there against a pretty shitty Auburn defense.

Just did a little quick math..TG would need 760 yards over our next 5 games (which is 152 per game) to break Herschel's freshman record. That's a pretty tall order and I doubt he gets it, but I can see him getting 2nd place.

Against AU, GT, and the bowl game he could hover around 150 yards. With a few long runs he could even get around 200 in one of those games I believe. The problem is that against GSU we'll probably use him very sparingly since we don't need him, and I don't see him rushing for 150 against alabama.

Hearst is the second best we've ever had in my book. He was something special.
