I dont think they would be undefeated and I dont think they would be playing at the level they are now. I think a lot of the Aggies fire is from being new in the conference and out of Texas' shadow, and wanting to prove they belong.

You only have to look at WVU and TCU to see that the big12 is not a joke.. The separation between the SEC and other conferences is more about total depth.

Aggy is a mediocre team from a bottom tier conference. I hope they can transition quickly so maybe they won't ruin the SEC strength of schedule.

WVU has been a letdown with the seniors they have, but TCU is playing too many true freshman/walk ons to get a true grasp on how good they could have been

TCU is a worthy addition to any conference because they have unbelievably hot coeds. It's just unreal. SMU is only half an hour away, but those chicks are not hot like TCU girls. Baylor is only 90 minutes away, but they're no TCU either.

Texas became a victim of their own success in recruiting. They recruited earlier and earlier and got the hype machine behind them (realize Bobby Burton who started Rivals is from Austin). If they looked at a kid they instantly shot up the rankings as a Sophomore or Junior because "Texas is interested, they must be great". Then those kids often times weren't as good as thought or they came into Texas expecting just to go to the NC game every year. Slowly but surely they ate away at their empire until suddenly the Emperor had no Clothes. Sure, they have some real talent but they also did a terrible job developing it.
Sherman had to truly rebuild from scratch. He got an A&M team that had talent but the talent there had attitudes that were poisonous. Guys like Javorskie Lane and Martellus Bennett who are now starting in the NFL and since straightened out had become completely undisciplined under Fran. Sherman had an eye for talent though and knew how to develop it, he just wasnt' a great closer. He refused to negative recruit and he really didn't punch back when others negative recruited A&M. Thus we ended up finishing in 2nd for far too many recruits and lost far too many commits late. Sherman had a lot of great character coaches but very little in the way of real recruiters on staff, it was far too much of an NFL mentality. Still, the base of talent was solid for Sumlin to inherit and he has taken things to a new level.
The recruits A&M is getting now is staggering and the bar is getting higher and higher. For instance A&M may well have the top 2 LB's in Texas locked up for 2014 before the first Jr Days. His entire staff is filled with guys that have been recruiting coordinators at previous stops. All of them clearly love recruiting and being very aggressive in spotting talent and locking it down. A&M has gone from holding its own with OU and winning some battles to the point where now they are kicking Texas' arse recruiting wise and crushing OU. If A&M can finish strong this year the sky is truly the limit.
It feels a LOT like when Jackie Sherrill was rolling. Sumlin has that same swagger.

The SEC is the only conference that regularly practices great defense, but other teams here and there occasionally have good, sometimes great defenses too like Pete Carroll's USC and Bob Stoops' Oklahoma. Oklahoma's defensive statistics were better than Notre Dame's heading into that game. What does that say? I don't think the Aggies would finish much better there.

KState is them but with better game control and a better defense. Other than that, probably. Texas is all of a sudden playing inspired defense...

So the remarkable consistently (at least by A&M's standards) with which we've played this year is primarily attributed to some intangible vigor produced by our "wanting to prove" something?

Texas has done mighty fine the past 3 years with all those 5 stars.
And Kansas State is succeeding this year on the backs of all those 4 and 5 star recruits... oh wait.
I'd rather have a coach like Bill Snyder who turns 2 star recruits into 5 star players than a coach who gets a lot of 5 star players like Mack Brown and doesn't do anything with them
Recruiting is overrated
He picks more than 75% of games correctly -- a better average than Vegas. And like I said, he does it in March.
There are exceptions to the rule, but saying recruiting doesn't matter is absolutely wrong and very ill informed. Yes there are Mack Browns and now Gene Chiziks, but in the broad picture, recruiting is the number 1 most important aspect of college football.
There is only one coach in his system who has coached more than 5 years and averages more than +2 wins over his predictions -- and that is Snyder who is something ridiculous like +4. Nobody else is even close though.
Even if KSU wins the national championship this year though, they will be the first team ever to win the BCS championship without a 4 year recruiting ranking in the top 15.

Kind of agree that undefeated would be a stretch though I think they easily could beat any team they played in the Big12. However, there'd be too many teams on the schedule capable of beating them in a shootout (like Ole Miss and La Tech came close to doing) to expect they'd win them all.
I'd say about the same record as in the SEC though maybe more chance of 10-2 than 9-3

Since Alabama ruined their program, they have a winning record against 2 Big 12 teams, Texas Tech and Kansas.
