LSU exposed what many had feared, this year's secondary is not nearly as good as last year's.

Surprisingly, it is because of safety play and a lack of depth at corner. Nick Perry and Vinnie Sunseri are a huge drop off from Mark Barron and Dee Milliner. Dee was the nickel CB last year, and he is the starting CB this year.

(2011 Nickel) Barron, Lester, Kirkpatrick, Menzie, Milliner. (Barron, Kirkparick, Menzie are all in the NFL)

(2012 Nickel) Belue, Milliner, Lester, Clinton Dix and either Perry or Sunseri.

Perry and Sunseri can't cover the hole behind the corner at the edge of the sideline. Neither is athletic enough.

Bama may have to consider as a fix to play Fulton as third corner, or play Landon Collins (has CB speed).

Bama's defensive line has actually improved from 2011 to 2012, mainly due to Jessie Williams. Bama has more sacks and Dlinemen have more tackles than in 2011. Average yards per rush is also down in 2012 compared to 2011.

You do realize that, 7 or 8 times out of 10, our corners were in position to make plays last night, don't you? Maybe it had something to do with the fact that Mettenberger and the LSU wide receivers were good, too?

Just a suggestion.

Which is all that matters when you play Oregon in the NC game

Neither defense is as good and I wouldn't say our D-line is as good either, regardless of sacks. Our run defense isn't the same, last year we had two immovable guys in Williams and Chapman, now Williams has had to move to the nose and been replaced by a weaker run defender in Stinson, Dial, etc.

Of course our secondary is weaker though, that was always going to be the case.

LSU's run defense is definitely weaker. Florida gashed them, we ran the ball really well. Their secondary isn't as good either but the main thing that jumps out to me about their defense is how its a good bit easier to run on them than it was last year.

The Belue kid was picked on all night. He better improve, quickly, because he was exposed. Milliner is a heck of a CB though.

It's pretty soft in the middle. Has been all year.

Belue's coverage on the Landry TD and the Beckham catch wasn't that bad really. On the Beckham catch he should have deflected the pass, but he was there both times. He certainly has things to work on, but he isn't bad by any means. I was actually kind of disappointed in Milliner last night, although I have higher standards for him than I do for Belue.

Belue's attempted tackle on Copeland was weak as hell though.

I really don't think your secondary is weak. Despite our receivers' lack of ideal size, and at times hands and concentration, they've typically run pretty good routes. They were out to prove something last night and they did against the best D in the country. I would be very surprised if any team on the remainder of your schedule is able to do what LSU did last night solely because a balanced offense is the only way to play a defense like Bama's.

Our Nickel works best when we go with Fulton/Belue at CB and Milliner at Star.

I was not critical of the play by our corners. I am critical of the play by Bama's safeties, especially in nickel and Dime.

I thought Belue played fine. The Td was a perfect fade. Not much more he could do. He was inches away from making a breakup, but there is no defense for a perfectly thrown ball. Belue actually bouced off Copeland, (270lb FB) got up and ran him down to make the tackle on that play where he caught a short pass and made a long run. Great effort may have saved a Td.

Sunseri and Perry are not fast enough to cover against a guy who throws a rope like Mett. He exposed their lack of speed. Collins must not understand his assignments yet because he can fly.

Manziel and Murray are licking their chops.

He had good coverage on both of the big plays he gave up last night. The fade pass into the end zone was placed perfectly. No defender, not even Charles Woodson, could have broken that one up. And the deep pass in the 4th quarter was well-covered, too, but just didn't bounce Belue's way.

We had good coverage, for the most part, all night. The only time LSU's wide receivers were really open is when we failed to get to Mettenberger on blitzes. Mettenberger just threw the ball perfectly.
