Was Muschamp set to take the Arkie job before Petrino decided to leave Atlanta?

Mark Schlabach wrote this back when it happened:

quote:

On Dec. 7, four days before Petrino would ultimately leave the Falcons after only 13 games to become Nutt’s surprising successor, Long called Muschamp to inquire about his interest in the Arkansas job. Muschamp worked as an assistant coach at Eastern Kentucky in 1999 when Long was the athletic director there. The only candidate standing in Muschamp’s way was Petrino, who couldn’t make up his mind after initially telling the Razorbacks he didn’t want the job. After meeting with Falcons owner Arthur Blank, Petrino called Long on Dec. 10 and said he was going to remain with the Falcons. With Petrino seemingly out of the picture, Muschamp was at the top of Long’s list. Long was scheduled to interview Arkansas interim coach/defensive coordinator Reggie Herring on Dec. 11, but the meeting was nothing more than a formality. After Herring was interviewed, Muschamp would be named the Hogs’ new coach — or so both sides believed. Things changed when the Falcons were embarrassed by the New Orleans Saints 34-14 on Monday Night Football on Dec. 10, the same day former Falcons quarterback Michael Vick was sentenced to nearly two years in prison for dogfighting. Petrino called Long the following morning and told him he wanted the Arkansas job. Long canceled Herring’s interview and began negotiations with Petrino. That night, Petrino was introduced as Nutt’s successor during an impromptu news conference. Muschamp, who had earlier declined an offer to become Southern Mississippi’s head coach, declined to comment on the Arkansas situation

Thx. Would Hog fans trade the good years with Petrino to have had Muschamp from the start?

Muschamp isn't the type of coach who would win at Arkansas

Nothing against Arkansas but I don't think Muschamp leaves Texas as HCIW for Arkansas. Let's face it he left Texas for UF after a wretched year for Texas.

Strong has proven he can win at a school with a weak recruiting base, something I don't think Muschamp could accomplish

Just my opinion. It's not a jab at your coach because I think he's the right one for you guys

Understand. I agree with you for a different reason. I think he's a darn good recruiter but he doesn't like offense. You guys need offense.

True, although I'd love to be able to field a competent defense

I think Strong would be able to give us that. It doesn't have to be Bama/UF/LSU caliber, but god damnit I'm tired of our secondary not turning their heads

Plus, he's had a successful quarterback in Bridegwater

Yeah...Muschamp wont be any good as a HC. The defensive mindset is fine with me. Throw the 40 times or more and you will always find yourself on losing side of the scoreboard against a really good defense with half decent offense.

Hey, tell me what you though of Saban after losing to ULL?

I remember what some of you were saying.

A lot of people were skeptical, not me, but a ton were. I was a believer in giving him 3 years, no matter what. He has the program moving in the right direction, much quicker than I anticipated.

I don't recall anybody wanting him fired after the 1st year though, not on here at least.
