BVG wants to see more playmakers on the DLine like they do in the NFL. That is the only bright spot on the defense. But I guess it has been a pretty dim bright spot so far this year.
I am glad to see he has the right mentality about doing things. Talking about moving players up and down the depth chart as they play better or worse.

The 4-3 is designed for the LB's to make plays, yet Chizik is ok with the DB's leading in tackles. I don't understand that at all.

The problem is that we need a MLB. Jake Holland just cant cut it or make a tackle.

Damn right! unless Jake Holland is one of his chosen ones who he will refuse to bench

So ready for Chizik to be out of here. BVG also said we dont have the personnel to play press coverage. Well who's fault is that?

It's just all so fricken frustrating to me. We have recruited well, and still suck in the back 7.

Jermaine Whitehead looks like the best pure athlete we've put back there in some time. He's fast, he can jump, he can hit, etc. It's his first season, so I give him the benefit of the doubt. Erique Florence was very highly recruited, yet hasn't made it to the field. Chris Davis has been a pleasant surprise after being a 3 star, but he's still nothing "special". Ryan Smith and DeMetruce McNeal are inconsistent. John Mincy shows flashes, and then makes idiotic mistakes. Robenson Therezie moves to running back after supposedly being a stud during Spring. T'Sharvan Bell is, well, T-Bell. He's been here forever it seems.
I don't know what the deal is.
I will say this: If we had some solid linebackers, I don't think we'd be so aware of the problems in the secondary.
I like our defensive line, hate the linebackers, and like the back end. The linebackers just cause us so many problems. That's one reason I can't understand why we haven't at least given Anthony Swain or Kris Frost a shot out there.

I'm still neutral on our tackles. I hope Gabe Wright can develop.

Saw that. Let's be honest here our defensive recruting has been average over the past few years. Our highly recruited defense players arent panning out like they should either and are not being developed apparently.
What kind of personnel do you need exactly to play press man coverage? Do these kids not know how to play man? Is it the speed or size, instincts? Im confused, it doesn't make sense to me. If you can't play a variety of coverages well, why are they being recruited?

How can anyone like our defensive line? One of our starting tackles has 1 tackle through two games and they along with the linebackers are the reason why we can't run man. Secondary has to play zone in order to provide run support

It's because they haven't been taught how to play man coverage well.. Not because they're incapable of doing it. Our defensive coaching staff sucks, despite our head coach with his "defensive background."

I can tell from VanGorder's interviews he isn't totally happy with the personnel he has right now.

They think they will all just get better over time and have no drive to get it fixed fast. They mindlessly repeat what is said to them about not worrying and everything being okay and they believe it. Someone needs to tell them they suck and they need to get better. I hope BVG is the one who will do this.

BVG regarding man coverage:
"We're not built to play a lot of press man," VanGorder said Tuesday night. "I watched the 1-on-1's again today. We've got to go out and practice and get better at that. A lot of our mission has been to cut down on big plays over our head -- that was a problem a year ago -- and you know, we've been able to do that in the first two games. We're going to play to our player's strengths, right now (man coverage) is not one of our strengths."

Odd that VanGorder is pointing this out while Chizik has been mostly silent on the topic. Or, maybe not that odd...

Not odd. BVG is very blunt and to the point. Chizik has hardly been open whether good or bad. Mostly bad of course. I like BVG's honesty. It also sounds like they can be trained up to man up, who knows?

If this is the case, BVG needs to re-evaluate the CBs that we have committed now. If Kamryn Melton and Jahmere Irvin-Sills aren't showing signs of being able to play the style of secondary plays BVG wants, we need to cut them loose. That may sound harsh, but this defense has been soft and mediocre long enough. It's ridiculous for us to be in year 4 -- let me say that again, YEAR 4! -- of Chizik's tenure and not have the talent to play whatever style of defense BVG wants to play. He and Chizik believe in the same system (supposedly), so why the frick is this an issue if Chizik has been recruiting guys for this specific defensive system for 4 years?
Sounds like another player development problem. What's frickin' new?

It's not odd. It's Chizik's typical top-secret coachspeak. I'm surprised he hasn't put VanGorder in timeout yet for speaking his mind.
There's a lot of crap that bothers me about Chizik right now.

Maybe all this pressure will make Chizik realize they have to be harder on the players. They were spoiled under Roof. Chizik also doesn't needs to let players swap to the offense just so they can have it easy.
