Does the East really have a shot at beating the West this year?

Never know, but it's highly doubtful IMO.

in 2001 West had no chance. #2 vs #25

This. Could be a 2001 LSU-UT, but chances are that it won't be.

On paper it's not likely. However, they're due and you never know if a team might get it all together like Poke State last year. Hell, if Arky can contend, anyone can.

You raise a lot of interesting points.

It will be a rematch of western opponents.

the chances of the east beating the west are as close to zero as you can get.
2001 aint happening because no one in the east as 2001 caliber saban type coach.
also the talent at LSU/bama laps tenn 01

2010: 56-17
2011: LSU scored 6 unanswered TD. UGA showed its true color as a mediocre team that went through an easy scehdule

I think it's possible, especially if the participant is Georgia. Remember, the title game is basically a one week extension of the season. Georgia will simply not have gone through the weekly wars that the West participant will have gone through, especially LSU, who will have played the same toughest two teams from the East that Georgia gets (USC, UF) PLUS Alabama, at Arkansas, at Auburn and at A&M. Georgia will be much less war weary than LSU and could win a one-off game playing in what is basically a home game for them (for the fourth time in the championship game, if we were to meet again).

highly disagree. 2001 UT team was fricking loaded especially on the D-line. IIRC 3 d-lineman got drafted in the 1st round in 2002 NFL draft.

id take current versions of LSU/bama over tenn 01.
plenty of nfl talent and better coaching staffs.

Maybe if the west gets together and votes to send Ole Miss.

Steve Spurrier says hello.
It's absolutely possible. Carolina has the talent to beat anyone in the country in a winner take all scenario. The best back in the country, a serviceable, possibly very good QB and 2 offensive tackle nightmares

2001 UT team had more NFL talent.

Looking at the teams right now, I'd say its unlikely but possible. Half way through the season, you may change your mind. Maybe Georgia looks like a juggernaut... Maybe Florida comes out of nowhere... Maybe USCe finally blows up in a good way. Frick, maybe Vandy has a dirtbag team that wins by a point every game.
LSU and Alabama have a good number of young players. The great thing about being great is you have really good young talent. The thing that sucks is that young talent leaves early and you have to fill those voids with unproven young talent. You never know what the end result will be until they start playing games. There are always overhyped teams. Didn't OU start off ranked #1 just last year? They didn't even win their conference... not that winning your conference matters. Yes, I'm still mad
