Have read on this site and others where the bama faithful feel '13 will be their year again. Couple of questions about certain position groups. who will be the bama starts on

O-line
D-line
Secondary

All other positions seem to be set.

The defense will bring back a lot of starters and contributors just like 2009 and 2011. The offense will be starting over.

Well, Alabama has pretty much made a run deep into the season every year since 2008. I feel confident that won't be changing anytime soon.

Your offense is simplistic, just plug and play the 5 stars.

It's a bit more than that with Doug Nussmeier at the helm. He is from the same tree as Bobby Petrino.

fwiw I thought Jim Mcelwain was very underrated and was one of the best OCs in college football.

EDIT : This is for the 2012 season. I read it wrong.

quote:

O-line

This is set, and it figures to be the best in the nation.

Cyrus K at LT

Warmack at LG (Top OG in the nation, unless you count Jones as an OG)

Jones (Top Interior Lineman in the nation, can play RT in the NFL, potentially LT.)

Anthony Steen (Started last year for the most part, injuries down the stretch put alfred ahead of him in the last few games. Not a first round talent like pretty much everyone else on this Line, but still pretty good.)

DJ Fluker (Top 3 OT in the country. Big and freakishly athletic.)

quote:

D-line

Williams played D-End last year and will move inside to Nose Guard. He should be like Josh Chapman and Nick Gentry merged into one except 3 inches taller and about 10 pounds heavier than Chapman. He can create pressure on the inside, and he holds his blocks well. Without starting on the inside yet he's already a top DT prospect.

Damion Square started last year, solid player who is good against the run. He's pretty quick, and could probably play DT in a 4-3.

Dial/Stinson will be competing for the other DE spot, but even though Stinson started in the A-Day game, Dial should be the favorite going into the season. He's 6'6" and close to 300 pounds. He can create pressue and he takes up blockers on the edge so the LBers can run downhill.

Secondary

Lester and Milliner return, with a good season Lester might go in round 1 of the draft. Milliner is close to being a lock for the first round as long as he doesn't suddenly drop off this year. Milliner locked down everyone he played last year, even Cobi Hamilton and Greg Childs. Lester only had 2 INTs, but he wasn't thrown at a lot and dropped 4 more potential INTs.

Vinnie Sunseri will play Safety with HaHa and Collins likely coming off the bench in garbage time. Sunseri is always around the ball carrier and plays well in the box. Belue and Dixon are JUCO transfers. Both are Juniors. Belue is so far ahead in the learning curve for Saban's D it is scary. He's a playmaker with elite speed. He needs to put on about 10 pounds though. Dixon is 6'2" and 200 pounds. He's a hard hitter and once he comes along he'll be a lockdown CB.

Fulton is also a Junior who has been in the system for years. He figures to compete for PT, but he isn't as talented as the other two.

Oh, I loved Jim McElwain. He had some tremendous game plans when it really counted. I just would like to see a more balanced offense, from a play calling perspective, and a more sophisticated passing game.

I can link you to a topic I posted where I saw on another board where some guy ran the numbers about Bama's offense last year. On meaninful snaps they called more pass plays than runs. It didn't account for garbage time, and sacks and QB scrambles where he was triyng to pass aren't counted as runs because the play called was a pass.

We were very balanced in terms of yardage last year. 214 YPG on the ground and 215 YPG through the air. We had 508 rushed and 357 passes. I would like to see that a little more balanced, but with the best OL in America and a talented RB corps, we'll lean on it at time.

You can't really count for garbage time and times that the QB was suppsoed to pass, but he was either sacked (counts as a rush) or he scrambled. We called passes on the QB ones. Plus, in garbage time OF COURSE you'd run the clock out, so no need to account for Sims or Fowler's carries. (Though Fowler did have meaningful snaps, this is counter balanced by the times Lacy was still in when it was mop up duty)
