Civil War nicknames for SEC states..

Well was in Richmond last week and stopped by the Confederate Museum, which is right next to the "Whitehouse" of the Confederacy where Jefferson Davis lived during the war.
Anyway according to a journal of a CSA solider each Confederate state's soldiers had nicknames in the CSA army and as you can see all 14 SEC schools can find their state.

I know thats where LSU got their Tigers mascot from, and I've actually heard the term Sandlappers before (but refered to SCers not MSers) and I guess AL is a Southern accented way of saying Yellow Hammer? But GA Goober Grabbers? The AR Toothpicks?
I know its not sports related but I found it to be interested.

That's pretty cool, I'm guessing that's where UNC got their mascot and I had no idea that's where it came from.

The story I remember (as best as I can recollect) is that a NC group had to hold a line and someone remarked 'They held their ground like there was tar on their heels". Accurate or myth, I don't know.

These names are funny as hell. I'm sure the meaning was different baack then but nowadays. Corn Crackers. Goober Grabbers? Was Goobers an euphemism for testicles?

Goobers were peanuts. I remember my grandfather used to sing a song about goober peas.

Not even sure.
SC had been founded in 1801, though not sure if we had chosen any type of athletic mascot by the time of the civil war but Rice Birds certainly sounds like it could be a chicken/rooster?
I know our school mascot was named after SC Revolutionary War hero Thomas Sumter so maybe that Sumter reputation carried over to the SC boys of the civil war?

Border Ruffians was a good description of Missouri back then. Those irregular troops who fought with the redleg jayhawk terrorists were a scary bunch. Tough, violent young men.

I'm curious about Gophers for Florida. The ground here in most places seems unsuitable for gopher burrows and I've never seen one here or even heard of them here.

I thought about that too. Maybe it had something to do with the Flers themselves rather than Gophers being in FL. Like maybe when it was time to dig in or something no one did it better than the FLers?

I think you ought to write a letter to Mr. Foley and co. Just imagine it on Saturdays... "Here coming those fighting Florida Gophers! Ready to dig in and gnaw away at the Goober Grabbers."

Toothpicks is a reference to the Bowie Knife and its association with Arkansas.
