Obviously, DE is a position need for us this cycle...we have So. Clowney and Sr. Taylor, with Jr. Sutton this season, and very little behind them. Senior Aldrick Fordham started 6 games last season at DT, but at 270 is a 'tweener in the mold of Melvin Ingram who was recruited as a DE....he has great experience and should be used IMO at both positions in '12.

We have Mason Harris who is being "groomed" as a OLB/DE hybrid, and have RS Fr. Gerald Dixon who can play some at DE, but who is growing into a DT. We have incoming Devin Taylor clones from the 2012 class in Darius English and Jhaustin Thomas, and then what we're bringing in with this class...

Turner is listed as a LB, but has been referred to as being recruited for a role similar to past Gamecock great Eric Norwood, who played DE and OLB during his time in Columbia. David Johnson is touted as an excellent fit in a role similar to Ingram's last season, playing both DE and DT. He will need to add weight, but at 250 is closer to it than Ingram was when he was brought in as a 220-lb LB.

Washington is a true DE...

Welcome!

Good to see you guys took Devin Washington. He's a good kid, and has the potential to be a solid DE in the SEC IMO.

COMMITMENT!!

247:

South Carolina landed its second commitment of the day from a defensive end-type on Thursday when four-star Devin Washington (Orlando, Fla./Jones) pledged to the Gamecocks, according to sources.

His commitment comes on the heels of three-star David Johnson from Lithonia (Ga.) jumping in the boat.

The 6-foot-2.5, 226-pounder was considered a South Carolina lean for some time and had more than 30 offers, including South Florida, UCF, Ole Miss, Clemson, Pittsburgh, Purdue, Rutgers and Missouri.

Washington is commitment No. 11 for the Gamecocks in the 2013 class. He was recruited to South Carolina by first-year running backs coach Everette Sands, who recruits the Orlando area for South Carolina.

Washington will play defensive end/outside linebacker at South Carolina and was recently named the defensive line MVP of the Orlando Nike Football Training Camp. He is an excellent student.

South Carolina picked up its second verbal commitment this week as three-star defensive end David Johnson (Lithonia, Ga.) ended his recruitment with an anticipated verbal commitment to the Gamecocks.

The 6-foot-1, 253-pounder also considered Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Louisville and a host of others.

South Carolina was the first to offer Johnson last year. Gamecocks defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward is his recruiter of record. Ward signed Joe Harris (2012 class) and Cedrick Cooper (2011 class) out of Lithonia previously.

Johnson dominated at both the Atlanta MVP Camp and Atlanta Nike Football Training Camp earlier this spring. He is verbal commitment No. 10 for South Carolina in the 2013 class.

Johnson is the nation's No. 17 weakside defensive end prospect and the No. 34 prospect in the state of Georgia, according to 247Sports.

Not living in NC, I can't say with too much authority....Mitch's high school - Raleigh Wakefield HS - is in the 4-AA, which is the highest level in NC...other 4AA schools in NC are Page, Independence, Fuquay Varina, Garner, etc. Mitch threw for around 3,900 yards and 50+ TDs his Jr. season...

Other USC prospects of interest that are "watchlist" prospects for commitments:

OLB Matt Rolin (4*, 94 grade) IMO our top prospect left on our board
OLB Larenz Bryant (4*, 94 grade) we will take both
WR Mike Williams (4*, 90)
WR Pharoh Cooper (3*, 83) we are recruiting him as a DB
WR Corey Cooper (3*, 87) expected to commit sometime in July

We have our Showcase Camp in July, so I expect to have a few more announcements then. Was really surprised to hear of the recent commits today...

Congrats on the new recruiting thread.

Be advised that hijackers are lurking and certain fan bases will tell you that you are wrong and that they will get all of your recruits.

Beware of Don Draper also. He is an especially pesky POS.

Any way, have fun!

With Shon Carson (RS FR), Mike Davis (incoming FR), and Brandon Wilds(Soph) on the roster, RB isn't a big priority even with Lattimore expected to leave.

Tyson Dye (GA) has named SC in his top 2-3 in a few interviews despite not visiting as of yet, so solid shot that he could end up being the guy. SC could also probably be considered the favorite for TJ Logan out of NC, but he's more of an all purpose/scat back and may not even be a take depending on how the numbers shake out. SC is also high on the list of David Williams out of PA.

Yeah with a name like Lattimore anyone behind him gets buried. I don't think people realize that after Lattimore went down the guy who replaced him and was pretty decent (Wilds) started as our #5 back and quite frankly has a legit chance of falling back into that spot even with all of that experience.

Lattimore replacement?

This has already been explained well above: we were averaging a bit over 200 ypg when Lattimore went down with his injury in the 7th game of the season (MSU). The rest of the way we averaged 185 ypg, to finish around 192 ypg for the season.

Dropping only 15 ypg after losing your Heisman-caliber RB for the season is what I call an excellent way to absorb such a loss...especially when we were left with a true freshman RB who was expected to be red-shirted when the season started, a raw QB who just took over for our dismissed 5th-year senior the week before, and our passing offense was sporadic at best up to that point.

Of course, Lattimore was shouldering the VAST majority of that 200 ypg on his own when he went down (he was the 3rd-leading rushing in the nation at the time), and afterwards it was done more with a committee of Wilds, Shaw and Miles towards the end. Lattimore scored his 10 rushing TDs in his 7+ games, and Shaw and Wilds combined to score all 11 of their rushing TDs in the last 6 games. To say the least we did pretty well to mitigate the loss as much as we could...

Wilds and Davis are similar type RBs to Lattimore in that they are good-sized, physical backs who hit the gaps quick and hard, run behind their pads, and always fall forward when they are tackled. Wilds does not have the same skill of slipping the initial 1st or 2nd tackle upon slipping through the LOS that Lattimore does, but still averaged 5 ypc when he became a starter.

Right now our RB depth is better than at any time under Spurrier, and is pretty young as well...
