UPDATE @ 9:30 a.m. The rumor all over A&M boards and twitter accounts at the time of the OP was that athletic Bill Byrne was fired last night ... well it looks like Byrne wasn't fired.
However, Byrne is in the last stages of being A&M's A.D.
With the move to the SEC and a massive stadium/facilities expansion looming, a natural transition point approaches. Expect A&M to hire a true athletic director and not Jackie Sherrill.

Everything is just widespread rumor across multiple boards right now.
Byrne supposedly did not get fully on board with the SEC move, and paid too much money to non-revenue sports at the expense of football. He is either resigning very soon or before the summer, depending on who you talk to.

I loved Jackie as our HC but wouldn't want him as an AD. It might be good for football but it would suck for other sports.

Byrne has been on his way out after this athletic year since last Spring.
He wanted A&M in the PAC12 and when that didn't happen he wanted the Big12. Everyone else at A&M wanted the SEC, including the fans.
Byrne is a west coast guy who is a huge Title IX supporter so that automatically tells you that he funneled lots of money to the meaningless sports.
He also set up bonus clauses in his contract A&M agreed too for championships in all of the sports, not just Football and Basketball (the money making sports).
Guy has made an extra 7 figures off of A&M winning shite in meaningless sports.
