Sadly I didn't get to watch the whole game. That was during homecoming and I was out rolling with some friends. I wish I could catch a replay somewhere. I know we jumped on them quick, then Devine tore us a new one.

I would hope you would do the same for a Bama player that, though not very talented and never very accomplished, was sent out on that field by his coaches and tried his damndest to make plays (even though he rarely did).

And unless some elementary school girls who started this thread can come up with evidence that Thorpe wasn't trying his level best out on that field, they can hide behind their skirts with the rest of the little girls giggling along with them in this thread.

That's why. Did I make myself understandable?

He had experience. Roof liked that in a player.

Plus, even with the move to safety, we only had a true freshman behind him. During his years at corner, we either had freshmen behind him, or no depth (earlier years).

If by "statist" you mean "investing control in the state at the cost of individual liberty" then not only no, but HELL no.

Good. Cause we have Theo to blame for that ponzi scheme that is social security and big government digging their claws in deeper.

Teddy was the first to introduce it. I can't remember if he actually implemented it or not, but he was the first to propose it.

One of the earliest American advocates of a plan that could be recognized as modern social insurance was Theodore Roosevelt. In 1912, Roosevelt addressed the convention of the Progressive Party and made a strong statement on behalf of social insurance:

ETA: It was FDR that actually enacted SS.

What TR talked about in the election of 1912 was not the same as what FDR did. And the idea was not new in 1912 and not new to Progressives. TR knew his shot of winning that election went out the window when the Taft people screwed him out of the nomination. Hence the Bull Moose party and the appeal to the Midwest (where he hoped to win). So, he geared his speeches toward them.

However, a study of the progressive movement shows that TR was very tame compared to the others. One of my favorite quotes said to TR was "You were the progressive leader of the conservative party, now you are the conservative leader of the Progressive party."

That election always fascinated me. Thanks for the discussion!

Yeah I fricked that up. FDR probably got the idea from TR though.
