driving route to fayetteville

i will be driving up to fayetteville from south louisiana in a couple of weeks for junior day. is it best to go through shreveport to texarkana and up that way. or better to go through monroe and little rock? thanks in advance.

i have only been to fv once but the best way for you has to be goin thru monroe to lr then get on 540. but i could be wrong

If you would like to take I-30 to I-40 in LR then I-540 in Alma.
You can get on 30 in Texarkana.
If you mean coming up from Texarkana through Hot springs on HWY7 to Russelville then I40, yeah you can do that, very twisty and "scenic" in parts.

In Texarkana get off on State line north towards Ashdown. That is hwy 71. Stay on 71 through Ashdown, Lockesburg, Dequeen, Mena, and Waldron. That will take you right up to Ft. Smith. Take I-40 in Ft. Smith to exit 2 for Little Rock, then take exit 12 for I-540 North. Take exit 60 for Razorback Road, go right off the ramp. That will take you directly past Baum and right up to the front steps of DWRRS.

my only worry is the time of night we will be coming up. not sure what time we will be able to leave at this point. i just feel better about driving all interstate if we need to stop and find a hotel. it looks like going that route you either sleep in texarkana or you have to make it to ft smith.

There is some nice places to stay around Mena.
I forgot about that route, it isn't that bad once you get past the shite smell in the air at Ashdown.
Nothing in the other towns mentioned.

Each of those towns are 45 minutes apart.
Mena would be a good spot to stop.
If you go all interstate you're looking 5 1/2 hours from TTown, you go my way it's 4.

I think it is six one way and half a dozen another coming from south Louisiana. If you go through Monroe and Little Rock, you'll be on four lane or interstate pretty much the entire way. If you go through Texarkana up HW 71, you'll be on a two lane road from Ashdown to just south of Fort Smith.
It is about 19 miles from Texarkana to Ashdown, 20 from Ashdown to Lockesburg, 15 from Lockesburg to DeQueen, 50 or 60 from DeQueen to Mena, 30 or so from Mena to Waldron, and then another 30 or 40 into Fort Smith.
The drive between DeQueen and Fort Smith is one of my least favorite in the world as that it seems to drag on forever. That said, it is a very pretty drive on some stretches and being from South Louisiana, you would probably enjoy going through the mountains.

If you go this route, you could also take a slight detour and visit Greenwood, AR, birth place of Tyler Wilson. I would take your camera with you.

Technically speaking the Ouachita's are a mountain range. Not the Appalachians or the Rockies in size, but still a faulted mountain range.

Nope, the Ouachitas are actually mountains. They are in fact, just about the oldest mountains in the entire world, once being higher than the Rockies but they have eroded down. That said, most of them start at nearly sea level and some go right up to almost 3000 feet. So, that is 3000 feet of actual mountain.

Hawgndodge's way is definitely faster, but you do want to hit it at the right time. I was covering tornado damage in Mena and my work put me up in a motel 35 miles north. I drove off around 12 pm to the motel and it was one of the worst drives I've ever done. Nothing but trees, no lights, very windy in parts. Not my thing, but some people dig that.
The interstate way is fine, but if you're wanting to stop, there's not a lot between Texarkana and Arkadelphia. That's a 75 mile gap, and even then, I don't think I'd recommend staying in Arkadelphia, either. Saline county is the first point you start seeing the outskirts of Little Rock, and that's about 120 miles from Texarkana.
I've driven these roads hundreds of times for work on tight deadlines, so let me know if you have any questions.

+1 Do this drive from Shreveport everyweek. Its not bad if you leave early in the morning.

I would say they are pretty comparable to lots of the Appalachians. They start out a lot closer to sea level than most of the Appalachians do so their heights are not the same, but in actual mountain, they are pretty close.
