LSU vs Bama: 2013 List of Targets/Offers/Commits - comparison

As per 247 for 2013 class as of today:

BAMA LSU

Targets 127 76

Offers 70 43

Commits 7 5

BAMA Offers: 70 (6x5*, 50x4*)
LSU Offers: 43 (1x5*, 31x4*)

BAMA Commits: 7 (1x5*, 5x4*, 1x3*)
LSU Commits: 5 ( 4x4*, 1x3*)

OK, I have a couple of questions about this stat...with only 25 scholarships to give, how can you target 5 times the number of players you can actually sign (BAMA)? Is it about right, too much? Is targeting 3 times the number of scholarships enough (LSU)?

Given that Bama has to go OOS more than LSU, it's understandable that they have to go after recruits that are harder to get, however on the same token, top LSU instate targets have gone OOS themselves.

Interestingly, Bama has offered 3 higher rated receivers than Falkins who haven't committed yet, this in addition to the 2 5star receivers they picked up this year. The numbers just don't add up in that early commit, whereas LSU has an immediate need at that position. Frankly, I think Bama has it figured out, we offer EVERYONE good, and you better not play around or your spot will be gone.

The good news is that so far, LSU this year seems to be venturing farther than in normal years to get good recruit offers. We really seem to be hitting top targets OOS, especially in Texas. LSU is a top 5 school, and we ought to not be afraid to ask any great recruit to come play for us, no matter where they live. I think the best way to push instate recruits to pick LSU will be to not wait around for them to have the Bama-lovefest fun, and go after OOS recruits.

Also more good news is that our instate athletes who have chosen LSU are being recognized by 247 as having great upside. If we can land a few exceptional targets, we're going to be just fine. If we can win out and beat Bama, it's going to be even better....

PS: Just comparing us to Bama, since we're the two of the best programs in the last 5 years in CFB, however Florida is very similar....same with Auburn....

It looks like LSU is being more aggressive than in years past, especially in Texas - and they should be after having in played in Dallas 2 years in a row, aTm entering the league and UT being down overall.

Get what you can when you can. Our competition is offering our state's best early so we better be offering them as well. And while we're at it, let's offer our other feeder state's best (Texas)too.

Seems like a smart move to me.

I wish sometimes there was a rule where you can only play for an institution in your homestate or birth state.

I know we have benifited from OOS players that were/are monsters like Bowe, Sonic Sam, PP7, and many more, but I hate to see our own shine in other places making those places look good.

and we wonder sometimes why Louisiana has been left behind a lot of other So states. Attituds like this don't help

I wonder how those numbers compare to the rest of the country?

I don't know why this was moved from the LSU Recruiting Board, this really pertained to LSU recruiting...Bama was just used as a comparison. LSU posters were commenting on it......it's not a negative on LSU recruiting, but maybe a reflection of how every school is going to have look at recruiting if they want to compete....

I mean, if Bama just had to rely on Alabama recruits, it would be much harder to win a NC. That's just a fact for any state school nowadays. Just get the best players you can...

I don't really agree with that. The core of Alabama's roster, that 2008 class, was nothing but Alabama kids. Alabama could certainly build a national title team with kids from Alabama. However, Coach Saban and his staff are at a point where they can walk into any living room in the country and sell the Alabama program.

Cap, as long as Saban's there, it's going to be national recruiting from now on. But it's not prudent to anchor your recruiting instate as a rule. Some years are worse than others.

I never bought that "put a fence up around the state" part so many fans follow. You don't need to get every instate recruit, just the ones you need. And if you don't get them, you go OOS to get someone as good or better.

I don't believe in that either. I was just stating that if Alabama was forced to live off on in-state talent alone, it could manage. That being said, I think taking 8-12 in-state kids every year is a good rule of thumb, and take the rest from around the region and country. That's been a pretty good strategy for Coach Saban and his staff since 2008.

You don't want that. If that were the case, Florida, FSU and Miami would dominate college football every year. You have no idea how much idea how much talent leaves Florida every year. In 2012, 7 of the top 9, 28 of the top 50 and about 60% of the top 100 left the state. Not coincidentally, 2 of the 3 LSU guys you refer to came from Florida.
