I will say that I believe saving the town from "Confederate guerrillas" is a bit of a PR move. The Tigers were formed to protect the town from all the marauding bands of criminals, including Confederate and Union members. Union soldiers burnt down homes and even a town. The guys in Columbia were getting prepared for whoever came after them.
It was damn-near total anarchy in this state at that time.
Not trying to play the "southern cred" card, because we know we are the midwest, but that wikipedia link is a bit misleading.
