Just curious. I'm sure it's happened before but don't know any offhand. TIA.

Sure it has happened way back when conferences were not in existence.

So then I guess this is pretty much a first, in modern history at least.
Congrats Bama! Breaking barriers again.

But seriously (somewhat), do Bama fans rank this one at the bottom of the 56 national championships since it's not linked with an SEC Championship?

Yea, but they still beat the greatest LSU team of all time 21-0!

Might be...I know a few have played for the BCS championship without winning their conference.

Well Oklahoma is the only one I can think of off the top of my head.

Good one.

Oklahoma and Nebraska both played for the BCS title with out winning their conference. Both were skull dragged all over the field.

That about describes that pitiful team that LSU fielded. I guess it was true, only Bama can beat itself. 21-0 and only once did they make it past the 50yd line. Complete domination. Pretty amazing if the LSU fans think this is one of the worst Bama NC teams, even though they skullfricked the greatest LSU team.

You also lost at home to that same team.

You would think celebrating another national title would take precedent over comparing yourself to LSU, but whatever.

Above all others except 58, 03 and 07?

I'm really struggling to get your anology though. I'm pretty sure there are many, many examples of teams winning a conference title but not winning a national title. So those would all just basically rank the same and be below a season linked to a national title.
Yet there seems to be only one example of a team winning a national title but not winning a conference title. So I would expect that national title would rank lower than the others for that school. Especially a school that claims a bazillion national titles like Alabama does. This is like a red headed step child title for them, I would suppose. Am I wrong?

As an LSU fan, I don't consider this one of the worst Bama NC teams. Not even close.
I was just curious what Bama fans though of it. Just wondered if not having it linked with an SEC Title made any difference.

I had to shake my head at the Big 12 fans saying "We won our conference!" Really? The Big 12 is the poster child of not winning your conference and still playing for the NC. They did it 2 out of 3, and Oklahoma and Nebraska were SPANKED in their conference losses, no less. What a bunch of hypocrites.

Penn State was in independent in 1982 and 1986. Pitt was indy in 1976. And every Notre Dame title was indy. Conference title is overrated.

Just goes to show the world that any team can beat any other team on any day. Ms. State could have beat LSU that day.

Also, a team that does not win their division or conference championship does not belong in the NC game, especially when the division champs and conference champs already beat them...........

I they were good enough to be in the NC game, then they should have won before.........

look that up and see if that has ever happened.....
