I keep hearing Defense wins championships and I think that is very true. However, the only difference I saw in these two games was the QB play between the two teams. AJ played great. JJ played worse than the first game. Both Defenses were really good, but AJ hit open receivers and JJ hit the pipe or something. I think QB is definitely the answer in the Pro's and was the answer in last year's title run by AU. Thoughts?

Alabama pretty much proved that defense wins championships last night an absolute chokehold

Defense is more important. Average QB play + Great Defense = winner (see 2000 Baltimore Ravens and 2002 Tampa Bay Buccaneers as exhibits a and b).

Great QB + poor defense = Baylor

It's a combination. Look at Saban's formula. The guy won the NC with Matt Mauck, McElroy and AJ. Efficiency and defense.

If you have a bad arse defense (like Bama and LSU), then you don't need a superstar at QB (like Cam) but you do need someone competent (unlike JJ) If you have a superstar QB then you still need some defense IMO because you can't count on the QB doing it as consistently as a defense. Defense is the main reason the SEC has 6 championships in a row.

You can win with great defense and adequate QB play but not even great defense can overcome bad QB play. Great QB play can combine with above average defense to win as well (see Auburn 2010)

Auburn had the #1 rush D in the SEC last season. A fact that often gets over looked. So D is important, even with a great QB.

I dunno. I thought Mike Dyer won that BCS game for you guys. All season long I agree, Cam pretty much picked up that team and carried it with some help by Fairley. During the game I thought Oregon did a pretty decent job of limiting how effective he could be on his own and Dyer really stood out to me as the key component to the championship win.
I also agree that AJ played lights out. Kept commenting on that during the game as I thought that was the biggest "surprise" of the night. Hard to say whether JJ looked like dog shite simply because of Bama's defense. I thought the whole offense just looked off to say the least. Clearly 44 days is too much time to give Saban to prepare for anything. Still shocked they didn't put in Lee at least for a series or two... wtf would it have hurt? (Besides his body and life expectancy?)
If there is any parallel to be drawn from NFL to NCAA, look at Green Bay and NE... Great QBs. Terrible Defenses. Saints. Great QB, average-ish defense? San Fran. Below-average QB. Great defense/special teams. Who would you put money on?

True. Bama has had the fortune of their QBs playing games of their life in huge games. See McElroy in 09 SECCG and AJ last night. No turnovers, accurate and smart.

I will be completely honest here. I think that defense would have beat 2010 Auburn soundly. Now my fellow Aubies may flog me.

This isn't this year's NFL, in CFB, you need defense for championships, in the NFL this year, not so much...

I hear you, but that D that played last night was way better then the 2010 Bama D Auburn made quit.

Would be a fun game to watch, but let's not forget. That was 21 Bama put up on the Nations #2 D and would be a part of the equation.

In the 1992 National Title game against Miami Jay Barker was 4 for 13 with 2 INT and 18 yards.

That pretty much puts to rest which is more important.

Actually its abnormal for defense to win championships in the NFL. Tampa, Ravens about only exception. The NFL is a QB league. Mainly because nobody can stack a defense like college. Its easier to get Elite QB - Great O-Line and you'll pretty much win guaranteed. That was the purpose of my comment about cheaper to get one instead of 11. In college there are very few elite QB's (harder to judge talent at that position coming from HS) plus D provides consistency when you have to win every single game (usually).

Clearly this depends on who you are playing. A team with an elite defense, give me the quarterback play. Bad QB play will kill you. Unless you are playing an elite defense, a good defense will serve you better.

A great defense trumps a great QB almost every time. Plus, a defense can score points. You don't want a QB making tackles.
