I'm sure somebody is going to berate me for bringing this up, as it has probably been beat to death in the past, but why is it if Saban is the "greatest coach in college football" that he flopped in his attempt to be HC in the NFL? Does anyone have any insight or opinion about this?

Nicky likes total control over every aspect of his team. He couldn't deal with the parts of the organization over which he had no control. He couldn't deal with player's egos and agendas. He flourishes at the college level because all decisions and player issues go through him- Little Napolean.

why ask exclusivlely about Saban? how about Erickson, or Spurrier? some peopel are meant to be college coaches - some are meant for the NFL. some are great Coordinators and shitty HC's.

Saban's a good college football coach. His discipline and control delivers a high percentage of wins. However, LSU is driving the guy nuts by beating him. Expect a higher level of play to escalate between LSU and Bama for the next 5 years. I'm starting to believe we could have a repeat NC game between LSU and Bama next year.

The reason I ask about Saban is because there is this cult-like persona that has been built up about him in the media (especially on ESPN)), as if his poop doesn't stink.

I agree - and in retrospect - my reply should not have started the way I did - i was just offering an answer.

Probably has to do with how good he is at all aspects of being a coach. His teams are VERY good. His defenses are VERY good. He is the best recruiter. He's done what he's doing at 2 schools. Not saying he's the best but not considering him would be insane.

That's a stretch. He took over a bad team. Miami's doctors suggested passing on Brees. He only coached there two years.

I agree but think about it....being the Coach that told Brees "No thanks"

If you will recall, Saban wanted Drew Brees for the Dolphins, but the team doctor would not clear him. Dolphins went with Daunte Culpepper and the rest is history. I often wonder that if Saban had prevailed with Drew Brees, then maybe he would have adjusted to the pros.
Saban is all about the entire structure of an organization and everyone within contributing by doing their very best to make the organization successful. At Bama, he gets the complete co operation of everyone from the President on down.
There was a plan to revitalize the U of AL to rise from the ashes of probation. Dr. Witt, Mal Moore and other University officials began initiatives before Saban came to campus. During the "dark days", a very strategic rebuilding of the physical plant and positive brand building has produced big gains and has transformed the U of A.
Saban recognized that he would have the tools and support that would enable him to succeed. That is hard to do in the pros.
