Chip Kelly, Oregon. The Willie Lyles stink is worse than it looks—but that’s the only blemish on Kelly’s impressive three-year run (Rose Bowl, BCS runner-up, Rose Bowl). No one else has been closer to beating the SEC in the BCS National Championship Game, and Kelly has won 25 of 27 conference games.
So one of the reasons that Chip Kelly is regarded so high is because he came the closest in beating an SEC team. Gotta love that. People are getting props for almost beating SEC teams.

Saban should be at number one. He kicked CUM's arse in their last two meetings and actually outcoached CUM in the 2008 SEC Championship but lost that game due to the overwhelming talent advantage Florida had that year. I'm a huge Gary Patterson but it's ridiculous to put him ahead of Les Miles. Les has a comparable winning percentage despite playing in a much tougher conference. And unlike Saban or CUM, Patterson's been at the same time for the last 10 years so he doesn't have the excuse of building up struggling programs. Miles should be in the top 3. Also, Fitzgerald's ranked way too high. Mike Gundy, Steve Spurrier, Art Briles, and Mark Dantonio should be on the list ahead of him.

Miles has proven to be a great coach in a tough league. Patterson gets his chance beginning next year. Peterson gets his chance when Boise joins a real conference someday.
