Interesting article on the SEC's rise to power (not by an SEC fan either).

It was pretty interesting. It makes a lot of the same points that people in the south make, but doesn't do it in that whiny bullshite way other parts of the country use when complaining about how we're better than them.

Oversigning to me is the biggest one. That creates competition at every level of the team as opposed to being a starter vs. second string vs. scout team. Now, even if you're a 4* star, they can get rid of you quick if you're not performing. That makes the competition internally much stronger. A guy at Penn State knows he's likely gonna get 4 years regardless, and if he's on the scout team big deal he can get a degree and move on with life. If you try and do that in the SEC, you'll be gone

Thanks got sharing, it was enlightening. I think the other conferences are wondering what they can do to compete. It doesn't look like the future of the SEC is going up get any worse.

Oversigning happens in other conferences, but doesn't get the attention it does in the SEC, I guess because they just aren't as successful. The number of BCS schools not from the SEC that have oversigned in recent years is pretty extensive, and a number of those schools have done it on multiple occasions.

A SURGE IN THE SOUTHEAST
From 1970 to 1997, the SEC captured just five national championships. Since the formation of the BCS in 1998, the conference has turned its fortunes around and dominated college football, adding on seven more titles. With an eighth to come after the Jan. 9 game, here's a look at which teams have captured championships during the past 40 years:

YEAR, CHAMPION
1978, Alabama
1979, Alabama
1980, Georgia
1992, Alabama
1996, Florida
1998, Tennessee
2003, LSU
2006, Florida
2007, LSU
2008, Florida
2009, Alabama
2010, Auburn

One point the author missed was in how the SEC has now stepped beyond the cycle nature of CFB. Because FL/LSU/UGA/AU have added to what UTk and UA have done in the past and with Arky/USCe/aTm attempting to join them the cycle lapse has been removed from the equation with multiple over-lapping cycles. As long as the SEC chant club can continue without us eating our own (see the old SWC) then we are here to stay. SOmeone will step up to fight us from time to time but they have to solve the cycle to stay in the game with us.

Other factors :
1. Cultural/Regional significance. CFB is just a much deeper and meaningful part of the entire culture here than any other conference.
2. The elite BLACK athlete. the elephant in the room. The South just has them in numbers not seen elsewhere.

Good article. I wonder if the big ten someday will do a Ivy League and just concentrate on academics and downshift athletics in favor of academics. Chicago did it and it hasn't hurt them academically and the the Ivy League is recognized as the best collection of universities.

The big ten either needs to make the same type of SEC commitment or go the Ivy League route. College football is becoming closer to the NFL in terms of money.

Either way is a winner, but no one looks down at Penn or Brown because of their football teams. No Ivy League school is hurting for money so you wonder if the big ten will come to a point where they give up and say "you win".
