Should only games within the Division count for SEC division champ purposes?

Miles seems to think so.

quote:

I would continue the practice of all games against all conference opponents counting toward the SEC standings. LSU coach Les Miles feels only divisional games should count toward determining the divisional title. There is weight to his words because of what happened to South Carolina this season. The Gamecocks beat everyone in the SEC East this year and didn’t go to the championship game because it had one more loss than Georgia overall, having lost to the West’s Auburn and Arkansas.

He's absolutely right about this issue. It's the only way to accurately compare the teams. Georgia didn't face any of the top three teams in the SEC west this year while South Carolina had to play Arkansas in Fayetteville. The SEC basically rewarded Georgia for being lucky with their SEC scheduling this year.

I agree. If there is a three way tie within the division, maybe you go beyond to the entire SEC schedule for tie breaker purposes. Especially with the unbalanced schedules some teams seem to get.

Yes. Makes no sense that a loss to a team outside of your division can effect your ranking within your division.

Completely agree, and Les has been pushing for that since 2006 when LSU got similarly dicked out of the SEC Championship Game. Probably LSU's best team ever by the end of the season.

The only problem I have is cross-divisional SEC games will be no more significant than any other non-conference game. It won't even effect the tie-breaker because it will go directly to head to head matchup.

Unless there is a 3 way tie in the division. IE, like we almost had this year with Alabama, Arkansas, LSU.

I disagree
It's our own damn fault (well Stephen Garcia's) that we didn't win the east.
