I thought that he would be getting a head coaching gig at an AQ school, seems like he would be settling with SM....thoughts?

Have you even noticed the trend of where BCS programs are hiring from?

And there is a Coaching Changes board.

Southern Miss is a good job.

I don't see him getting it over Ellis Johnson though if Johnson is serious about it...

You do realize this will be his first head coaching job at the college level? Southern Miss is a competitive program and a great place to use as a stepping stone to a BCS conference job.

Too young.

Would be entirely in over his head at an A&M type school. Its his first major HC stop.

If he fails at A&M like Shula at Bama he is back to a coordinator/position coach type role.

Must be problems at Bama...

Seriously the trend seems to be you need head coaching experience... So folks are going that route instead of coordinators...

2nd best team in the sip is a good first job especially for a gamble like smart. Smart might be a great coach but we all know the mastermind behind bamas d and it aint smart. He was just boom part 2.

plus.. if he wants to succeed Saban at Bama.. the recruiting network for So Miss and most of the SEC West is pretty much the same.

Thats what I keep hearing.

I think Smart is using this USM interview as a Jimmy Sexton advised move to get him a Raise from Alabama.

bama shouldn't give him a raise considering he is a puppet.

He's one of the most important recruiters on Alabama's staff. Say what you will about his role with the defense, but he's a top-notch recruiter. He also does pretty well with developing LBs.
