They proceeded to throw the ball with 5 minutes to go to get another score at the 3 minute mark.
21 points is not an impossible lead to overcome with +5 minutes to go. Kicking the field goal was smart, not running up the score.

We weren't running anything up. If we really wanted to run up the score, we would have just kept pounding the ball.
