Went to the game and reviewed the broadcast 3 times. This is my take.
Like it or not, Miles has evolved into the better game day coach in these match ups between LSU and Bama. I know each team has different unit strengths and tendencies, but on the whole the talent on that field last night was as equal as it could be. Miles recognized early in the game that the Ds would dictate the game, no player, not Trent, and not any of the QBs for certain, could take over the game, and points would be at a premium. He played field position, relied on his defense, took no unnecessary risks, and made offensive calls that put his kickers in a position to succeed. Saban failed miserably. He used kickers when he should have punted, got cute near the red zone with his play calls. Used WR in wild cat to throw passes the couldn't throw well, and put in an injured Maze to field a punt when a backup fair catching would have been the smart choice.
He made ALL the bonehead moves. Miles could have swapped sides last night and won the game with Bama's players.
The future looks bright for THE HAT. Saban should go be D coordinator in the pros. He's a genius on that side of the ball and it shows, but the game as a whole may be eluding him some now.
At least he didn't throw his players under the bus. Maze and Richardson played brave and inspired last night, but the Bama coaching staff came up short!

agree, Les was loose and his team played loose and smart for the most part.

I used to think that Miles was the luckiest idiot in the world. Now I think he has evolved into a pretty good coach. He has a different style, and he has a way of motivating his players into a mad frenzy. I think a good coach wins not only because he has the best talent, but because his players WANT to produce for him. It just so happens that LSU has both this year

quote:good insight but, i can't agree with this statement. in the last 5 years, bama has been quite possibly, the best team in the country, much less in the toughest conference. you're right that he made a few decisions that were bettered ever so slightly by miles. but that's a far cry from the game having passed him by.
the game as a whole may be eluding him some now.
i think he's gotten wiser during his time at bama. i just wonder if his intensity has a negative affect when the playing field is even.

That's probably why Saban was attempting 50 yard field goals from the get go. He wasn't worried about LSU's O.

He didn't throw anyone under the bus. He was asked what the difference in the game was. He said missed field goals and a punt that wasn't fielded and the squandered red zone opportunities. That's the truth. Sorry if it hurts.

I agree that the game has not passed him by. I said it before the game, I will say it afterwards. Both coaches are in the Top 5. Both teams are nearly equal. Somebody had to lose.
I keep hearing about how Saban should have punted. Hindsight is 20/20...missed FG = should have punted....but it is not like those missed FGs=Pts for LSU. It was a gamble...didn't hurt other than some Field position and with 70 yards punts it probably wouldn't have mattered anyway.
Good job Tigers.....great fight this past Saturday night!

Saban has a long history of throwing fans, players, outside destractors like media and such under the bus when things don't go his way. That's a fact. I said he didn't do it this time. Also, Saban was making low percentage calls repeatedly, giving up crucial field position, and screwing with his own kicker's heads.
Why would it hurt me? My team was on the right side of the score board buddy.
I stand by my assessment. Bama fans always want to look at the unimportant numbers.
HERE ARE THE IMPORTANT ONES
9-6 LSU
3-2 Miles vs Saban
5-2 Miles vs Bama

And one more point. Bama does not deserve a rematch should both teams win out. The SEC played that card by lobbying against an Ohio State Mich rematch a few years ago in favor of one loss SEC Champ Florida. I love the SEC, but We can't have it both ways in a non-playoff MNC situation. Bama had us on their turf with the whole world watching and genius Saban at the helm and 92000 of their screaming fans and music from ACDC and Lil Wayne continuously pumped in at Extreme Decibels and could not get it done.
Sorry Bammers. No do overs. Go eat a corn dog. It'll make you feel better.

Bammers refuse to eat corndogs until they beat LSU again. I Couldn't imagine going 5 or 6 years without a good corndog.

It wasn't LSU's field position that hurt Alabama after the missed field goals...
It was Alabama's on their NEXT set of downs. Punt deep into LSU territory, stop them, and you receive the ball with much better field position on your next set of downs (perhaps even allowing your field goal kicker to kick from a range he's historically good from).

quote:Let me see if I get this Skippy. So Nick is not afraid of LSU's O. This also means he has great confidence in his D's ability to stop said O. So, knowing he has a kicker who is modest or average at best, he decides to go with the weaker or lower percentage choice. Is that how mastermind coaching works?

It would have been really dumb of him to try to pin LSU's O, the one he is not afraid of, deep to play the field position game.

Miles didn't take risks nor was his offense able to do jack squat outside of a busted coverage. Alabama's offense was at least able to move the ball. We had numerous blown plays that basically pissed the game away. The score could have just as easily ended up 20-6 Bama. Bama outplayed LSU and is the better team. Miles made no difference at all in this game. His team was stymied. Alabama threw the game away on its own.

Yes Skippy that's how it works. Take a shot at 3 points knowing your D won't let the other team score.

punting and pinning LSU inside the 10 would have been a better option then

I'm pretty sure that was the thought process of Leslie as well..

bama ran 17 plays from LSU's 30 or better, the result?...minus 12 yards. This isn't 'Dance with the Midgets', where style points count
