If we had a college football playoff, would that diminish a game like LSU/Bama?

First of all, I want a playoff NOW. It's stupid that we don't have one. Every sport has some time of playoff except college football.

But I started thinking today that if we had a playoff it might diminish a big game like LSU/Bama.

As an LSU fan I see this as our only roadblock to Atlanta and a BCS bowl, but it might not be the end of our crystal hopes if we lost if there were a playoff

No. Do the NFL playoffs diminish games like the Patriots-Colts annual game? Before Peyton got hurt of course.

As long as it was really hard to make the playoffs (maybe only 4-6 teams selected), the regular season would still have value. The problem is that every year the teams left out would complain about it and eventually more than 4-6 teams would be let in.

the premis for this is that there is no possible way lsu or bama lose before playing on 11/5 correct?

frick playoffs. Seriously.

There's a reason the regular season in college football is the best in sports.

ETA: Sorry guys, but no one would ever let a play off sit at 4 teams or so. That's a pipedream. Too much money in the TV rights, just look at how that's driving conference realignment.

To another person's question about Colts/Patriots. Yes, it does. Not that it's not a big deal, but this coming game essentially decides who gets a shot down the road.

Yeah. It has ABSOULTELY NOTHING to do with tradition, passion, rivalry, or tailgating.

I think an 8 team playoff would be the best setup, and if that would be too drastic of a change then a 4 team playoff would do. I don't like the idea of teams getting a first round by in the 6 team playoff scenario.

Read what I said, and don't put words in my mouth. I'm saying why the regular season in CFB is better, not why it's better as a sport. The sense of urgency each and every team has to have for 12 straight weeks is not rivaled in any other sport.

His point is still valid.
With the system we have now, every regular season game is HUGE.
With a playoff system, this would not be the case.
I love college football just the way it is.

How could it not? Loser probably won't have a shot at BCSCG anymore unlike a playoff where you only have to make final 4-8 teams.

If NFL had no playoffs, losses would be MUCH more important and Wild Card teams would never have a shot at the Super Bowl.

I heard Brian Billick say something very interesting last week on the radio. He was asked if the Cowboys should sit Romo and the Eagles should sit Vick because in the grand scheme of things it is only one game. His response was that losing one game in the NFL is like going on a 6 game losing streak in the NBA and a 10 game losing streak in MLB.

The NFL regular season compares favorably to college football. The only difference is the NFL settles it on the field the correct way in the end.

My spelling sucks too. Point being you get beat before that game, or they do, and the whole thing is moot. Therefore yes i do belive it is contingent upon both being undefeated going into that game.

I think it would take away slightly from the magnitude of the game, but it would still be big if both teams come in undefeated. It would still have Division and Conference Championship implications, as well as giving the winner the inside track to make a playoff. Just think how epic the game would be if LSU-Alabama played again in a playoff or National Championship game though in a rematch. That would be a huge game.

This.

I just don't see how people can be so excited to relegate the regular season into a play-in. It's terrible.

Play well against solid competition for 12 weeks, and be judged for it. It's a beautiful thing.

8 team playoff would diminish that game.

If both remain unbeaten going into Nov 5th well nothing needs to be said

IF playoffs exist, well both would make it anyway, big deal on a regular season game

so the answer is yes, playoffs would diminish that game this season

Im a BCS guy, not a playoff guy in the interest of full disclosure
