...on the fake FG? It wasn't the play itself that was such a big trick play, but the shift out of the FG formation. I've never seen that done before. Petrino had at least 5 seconds for his brain to engage and call a timeout. If he does, the element of surprise is gone, and Bama probably punts. IMO, that TD is entirely on him getting out coached on that play. Maybe he took a gamble that his defense would make a play, but why even gamble at all? Just call a TO and make them punt, most likely.

Saban utterly mind fricked him, there was nothing he could do but stand helplessly in wonder...

Thought he had it covered, and did, but by a very slow player. Good play design.

I agree that a timeout should have been taken, but it's likely that Arkansas was in "safe" anyway, meaning they had the personnel and the play call to defend against a fake field goal. It was a well executed play and hindsight is 20/20.

BMW is a huge TE, but you can't cover him with a DE/DT...

We had a D line man against a tight end. 95 percent of the time the D line man will get beat. This all falls on Petrino.

The TE lined up on the other side of the line from DD. DD made a great play to even see that the TE was running behind the line toward his side and to see that he needed to defend him. It was a crazy play that was executed to perfection, we should have taken a timeout, but again hindsight is 20/20.

Great, GREAT!!!, play design. He should've called timeout, but like the earlier poster said, we were in a FG safe defense. It all boils down to stategory on that one and we just got outcoached. Our ST fricking suck in BDS.

Maybe, but you don't run your safe FG defense on 4th and 4 with the QB in the shotgun with an empty backfield and no kicker. You run your safe defense to make sure the kicker actually kicks the ball, which doesn't make sense if there is no kicker.

But no FG "safe" is truly prepared for what was basically an outright offensive play with the QB under center.

I was screaming the exact same thing. Call the timeout and bama has no choice but to just go ahead and kick it

This, Tremain Thomas should have stayed at home but he saw all of the recievers crowding the right side and that left our 305# De to cover. I'm surprised DD saw him. He isnt nearly fast enough to cover a TE, even one William's size.
