First of all, although I am a die-hard Tiger fan and from the ole school, I always did have great admiration for Coach Bear Bryant. In all my years up till we finally beat the Tide and The Bear in 1982, I always felt that we were so intimidated by the Bear before we even hit the field that the game was basically over before it started. As you probably always heard from most Tiger fans, Ole Cholly Mac never could beat the Bear and that is why he was forced out at LSU. Of couse not too many other coaches could beat the BEar either. But here is my question that I was pondering, During the Bear's last 4 to 5 years of coaching was he still hands on in everything or had he at this time pretty much turned it all over to his excellent assistants and was more of a CEO type of coach. Thanks in advance as this was a discussion that me and a friend had gotten into.

I have read several Bryant biographies and he often spoke in his later years of how he missed the old days when he was more hands on and that now he spent most of his time "Coaching the coaches", so I would say the answer to your question is probably yes, although not to the extent that Joe pa or Bowden got to in their later years as he was a good deal younger than they were when he retired (68 I believe).

Thanks for the answer Draconian, I havent had the opportunity to read any biographies on the Bear, but obvioulsy I need to. Wasnt for sure, but as stated , just a friendly discussion with a friend and I had posited that the Bear had become more of a CEO coach in the last few years with quite a good many excellent coaches coming from his tutelage. I definitely believe you answered my question. Thanks so much.

Always a nice touch.

Though a Chesterfield advertisement would have been oh so much better...

In his later years, he relied and made sure he hired assistants and was more a CEO type of coach. This quote of his, sums it up:

quote:

"I don’t hire anybody not brighter than I am. If they’re not brighter than I am, I don’t need them.“

That was the quote when asked about the hire of Pat Dye.

Yeah that puts it all in perspective with that quote right there. Again, thanks.
