Georgia, LSU, and Ole Miss are this year. I know Alabama has the last few seasons. When's the last time the rest of the SEC schools have done it?

This year. Before that, 2009. Before that, 2007. Before that 2005. Before that 2003, then 2002. We have a habit of scheduling semi-good teams to open with. And 3 of those above mentioned games have been away from Athens.

I am glad that Bama is waiting a week this year. When you have unproven QBs, it helps to have a cream puff the first week.

The upside of a big time opponent is the momentum factor going forward if you win. It has worked in Bama's favor when they won the big game opener.

LSU has done this more frequently now as well. In 2002, we opened on the road in Blacksburg. In 2004, we opened with Oregon State at home. In 2005, we opened on the road at Arizona State (was supposed to be in Baton Rouge, but Katrina stopped that). In 2009, we opened on the road at Washington. Last year, LSU opened with UNC at a neutral site. And this year, with Oregon. It makes it more exciting for the fans, although there is the potential for a loss.

Had LSU known what was going to happen a few weeks leading up to the game, perhaps we would have rethought with opening with Oregon.

I think most of the big schools do, but they also make a lot with these neutral site games and it helps with recruiting those areas.

1986: Ole Miss
1985: Ole Miss
1984: Ole Miss
1980: Texas
1974: Southern Cal
1973: Southern Cal
1972: Southern Cal
1971: Cal
1970: Stanford

Yea, I noticed that. We went out to the West Coast a lot during a period, and they came here as well. Mainly during that portion of the 70's.

I agree that it's probably for the best this year. But after seeing the enthusiasm of the LSU fans this week, with their upcoming big OOC game, it makes me miss UA starting with a big game.
