AU's weren't paid for being tigerettes. They were simply student-employees who happen to be tigerettes, meaning they had a job at the bookstore or something.

Like it has been proven, Tigerettes are still volunteers.
As in, when your boy SbB dropped the bombshell, he only included about 25% of the actual volunteers who got paid. Because they actually had a job within the University, unlike the other 50 who he decided not to include in his in-depth study.
